The burst represents African-American freedom radiating outward from Texas, signifying the complete enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation throughout the entire United States, which would ultimately be realized with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Pictured here is the starburst featured in the center of the Juneteenth flag, representing both the idea of freedom and the Lone Star State of Texas.
Considered to be the longest-running African-American holiday, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, effectively ending chattel slavery in the former Confederacy.
Orange Grove wishes everyone a Happy Juneteenth! More and more people have become aware of this special day over the years thanks to a growing Juneteenth awareness movement, culminating in Juneteenth's adoption as a Federal Holiday every year on June 19th.
