If customers are proactively ticking the checkboxes to add things that is totally fine. What is not OK is optional extras that cost money being auto-added to the cart without explicit buyer consent.
At the end of the day, the test is very simple. When buyers get to checkout, are they surprised to see paid addons in there that they didn't ask for? If so, you are burning trust. If not, you are fine. Upselling is a totally valid tactic, as long as the buyer consents to it.
