Collisions between giant landmasses and flooding by ancient seas created Grand Canyon's rock layers. Squeezed between the Pacific Ocean floor and the Rocky Mountains, these layers rose to form high-elevation plateaus. Over time, the Colorado River carved this massive canyon.
