Behind some of India's biggest medical milestones was a doctor who dedicated his life to making advanced healthcare accessible.
Padma Shri awardee and eminent neurosurgeon Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra passed away at AIIMS Delhi on Monday evening, leaving behind a remarkable four-decade career in medicine.
In 2017, he led a multidisciplinary team in a historic 16-hour surgery to separate Odisha's conjoined twins, Jaga and Kalia. Both children survived, marking a landmark moment in Indian neurosurgery.
Yet, his contribution extended far beyond the operating theatre.
As the founding director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar (2012–2016), he built the institution from the ground up, introducing medical, nursing and super-speciality courses.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued serving public healthcare by overseeing the creation of over 2,600 dedicated beds across Odisha.
An accomplished academic, he also authored around 870 research papers and 16 books, advancing medical knowledge across generations.
Conferred the Padma Shri in 2025, Dr Mahapatra leaves behind a lasting impact through the lives he saved, the institutions he built, and the doctors he inspired.
Rest in peace, Dr Mahapatra.

VIDEO | On the opening ceremony of the 47th World Armwrestling and 28th World Para Armwrestling Championship 2026, Parvinn Dabass, co-founder of Pro Panja League, said, "Armwrestling is one such sport that does not segregate armwrestling and para armwrestling. If you look at the Asian Games, the Asian Para Games take place afterwards. Similarly, with the Olympics and Paralympics. Here, the World Armwrestling and World Para Armwrestling Championships take place on the same stage and at the same time. This tournament started today and will end on November 6. It includes sub-junior, junior, youth, senior, master and grandmaster categories, with participants ranging from 14 to 60 years of age, both men and women. In para armwrestling, we also have 65 categories..."

Honoured to be part of the Opening Ceremony of the 47th World Armwrestling Championship and the 28th World Para Armwrestling Championship in Delhi from 29th October to 6th November 2026.
Bharat is hosting athletes from over 60 countries, nearly 1,400 competitors, including around 400 para athletes and 250 Indian sportspersons. For many, this is the biggest stage of their careers.
My best wishes to the People’s Armwrestling Federation India, the organisers, all participating nations and every athlete. May this championship showcase true sportsmanship, strength and inclusion. 🇮🇳💪
