It’s October 26 and @theivycafe in Blackheath already has its Christmas decorations up. A couple of frosted pines and a large polar bear in a festive jumper. Quite jolly but if you can’t wait until Advent could we at less delay Christmas until after All Souls?

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

After 64 years in the village and 37 as much-loved tenants of @ASBlackheath’s parish hall the @Mary_Evans picture library is leaving but will continue as an online business. Wrote this for @ObserverUK on its history and some of the odd requests it’s had observer.co.uk/news/national…

He might also have noticed these:
Piglet felt so Foolish and Uncomfortable that he had almost decided to run away to Sea. “Well done, Piglet,” said Christopher Robin. And at these encouraging words Piglet felt happy again, and decided not to be a Sailor after all. ~A.A.Milne #encouragement

The sad thing is they then take them down before New Year. I guess my campaign to honour Candlemas will have to begin earlier this year. (Actually, I’ll allow decorations to go up with Advent but they must stay up to February 2nd.)
They are putting up *Christmas lights* on the trees outside the office and under the Shard. It is October 13th. This is why we can't have nice things.

This may reflect what it has learnt from my interest in politics rather than my French accent but my lousy voice recognition software just transcribed Paris Saint-Germain as “Parris [presumably it means Matthew] Sam Gyimah”

Now we are 100. AA Milne's bear of very little brain hits his centenary. I look at some of his controversies for @Telegraph, from President Xi's social media ban to a slasher film via Dorothy Parker's acid wit. Paddington doesn't have to put up with this. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Yep, I’m a pretentious traitor. Always suspected it but never realised it was how I write my sevens that gives it away
The Germans are caught because they cross their sevens, a thing that no British person did then but millions of pretentious English people do now, to be more European’.

Features extracts from the excellent new books by @MorleyRA @BijanOmrani as well as some Wodehouse, Betjeman, Hardy, Larkin, Pepys, Sayers, Pym… and some superb music. With Test Match Special and Soul Music, Words and Music is what the BBC does so well. Hope they avoid the cuts
