Great new blog by my @ITIFdc colleague @patrickgrady_ on the EU Kids Act, arguing the regulation risks pushing children off the online communities they depend on without giving them viable alternatives.

You have to be pretty far off in the deep end to type this without irony
It’s weird that the CEO of Hugging Face continues to be an “AI is normal technology” guy despite being the victim of an autonomous cyberattack by a swarm of rogue agents, arguably the least normal thing AI has done so far.

It's okay to be concerned about new technology, but repeatedly shouting "fire!" in a crowded theatre is irresponsible. It leads to deadly panic, confusion, and bad choices. Worse, we will no longer recognise genuine dangers. halffullai.substack.com/p/th…

Berlin-based search engine Ecosia, used by government services, is dropping its French AI partner, Mistral, its CEO told POLITICO. The company will now bet on open-source models, including those from China. vist.ly/5mh5y

It may be convenient to pretend that agents are dressed up and walk around on their own. But it is an illusion. Like the emperor in Hans Christian Andersen’s fable, AI agents have no clothes. halffullai.substack.com/p/ai…

Europe has put open-source AI at the center of its push for tech sovereignty and greater technological independence. But while it is unlikely to match the United States and China in the race for the most powerful closed models, it has a real opportunity to lead in open AI...🧵

NVIDIA’s new "Open Agent Safety Platform" is a good example of how to pursue safety without slowdowns in AI. In this case, build safety into the infrastructure itself, with continuous monitoring and real-time enforcement. No need to restrict the development & deployment of AI.
Today, with over 100 industry partners, we introduced the NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform, bringing together OpenShell and Sentry. Artificial intelligence is extraordinary technology that will advance discovery, productivity, security, health, and prosperity for generations to come. But its full promise can only be realized when people have confidence that AI is being built to be safe and deployed with wisdom and responsibility. This is bigger than a single product. It's the beginning of an open ecosystem to build the trust layer for safe agent systems. Together, we are building the foundation of the AI economy. Trust and innovation are not in conflict. Safety is how trust is earned. We must build not only the most capable AI, but the most trusted AI, so that this extraordinary technology can realize its enormous promise for the world. nvda.ws/4hcoq7m

If you believe the risk is coming from 1-3 people in a garage with no money and no compute, you just don't understand this technology and haven't learned anything this summer. Risk comes from the asymmetry of capabilities created by secret labs training frontier agents and running them with massive amount of compute. Open-source is exactly the solution to this asymmetry and empowers hospitals (and any smaller orgs) to defend themselves!
We're used to thinking of open-source models as an unadulterated good. But in the case of AI, they can actually pose additional dangers, as @ReidHoffman and I got into at #CGI2026. I appreciated this nuanced discussion.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects. Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it. apnews.com/article/openai-sa…

We have just finished the inaugural meeting of the Rhine Group. We discussed the central elements of Europe's competitiveness agenda, including basic science, AI/compute and cybersecurity, defense, energy, entrepreneurship/start-ups. I will be updating you on any progress we may have. Some of the projects we will pursue include: - We'll help Europe catch up on compute (Mario Draghi diagnosed the problem and some solutions in a recent FT piece) - We’ll help European universities and scientific institutions and explore a Rhine Chair program with European universities. - We’ll work on some key EU policy challenges, including facilitating the flow of capital to entrepreneurs. - We will set up a grants program that I will explain and announce here.

People outside the AI labs should have a real say in how this technology develops, and a clear way to judge if it's happening safely. Standards should help prevent the concentration of power, including by making sure new companies and open-model companies can compete. They should also help countries and companies compare evidence and learn from failures. We think the US should lead this effort. Here is our proposal: openai.com/index/building-st…
