AI will first improve and then kill design systems. Good riddance.

You won't be switching from Sketch to Figma in 2025. If anything, it'll be the other way around. For starters, when it comes to price and features (flex layout coming soon) it doesn't make sense. But you also CAN'T do it: The .sketch file importer in Figma completely garbles the files and makes them unusable. What was once the main thing leading people to switch, combined with bad pricing, bad policies, bad privacy and forced features seems to be another nail in the coffin. Importing a .fig file into Sketch actually works way better. Seems like this will be the way.

What are we doing in 2025 at @sketch? Right in the first months, you can expect: - Stack Layout (@framer are the OG on stack/auto-layout, so we believe calling it stacks fitting) - Frames (well, same reasoning as above, @figma nailed the implementation) - Lots of minor improvements, which IMO is what makes Sketch the best editor experience out there for years already. We're also still at work on something completely new... (more on that once we ship the good stuff...)

I remain dedicated to social justice but the forces of darkness are MUCH better at recruiting
there’s no real reason i need to discuss this but it’s sort of been on my mind lately anyway and last night sort of crystallized a process i’ve been going through lately in my own mind. it’s not really a secret in my friend group that i’ve been getting courted by nrx & nrx-adjacent people for over a year now, and they’ve always been nice to me and invited me to their house parties and so on. left wingers in contrast have exiled me from friend groups, brigaded my account and threatened my life for helping people improve their lives with capitalism, and even giving ~every discretionary dollar i made on wall street back to the queer community, it’s just more proof to them that i am a capitalist running dog who needs punishment. some of my friends have wondered why i’ve gradually drifted more to the right, and i think that’s really just a lot of it. the rw people i meet mostly really respect what i’ve done for the queer community as a demonstration of agentic behavior even if they have different views. the left wing people have shouted me down about how bad it is that i engage in capitalism and shouldn’t use my contributions as a proof that i care, that anyone could do that and it doesn’t mean anything and oh by the way you and your friends deserve the death threats we post at you for participating in the economic system we all live under at all and especially for trying to use it to lift each other up. now, i know a lot of this is probably selection effects. many of the rw people who don’t like me probably just avoid me entirely. but even so, i’m a transwoman with no education living in the gayborhood of one of the most liberal cities in america with a history of queer community efforts. it shouldn’t be hard for the lefties to win me over to their side or at the very least be allies. and sure enough, i am friends with a few communists irl who are lovely people. but if your messaging is alienating me, and targeting me as a person to exile, why on earth should you expect it to play well with normies. i want all queer people to win, leftists included, but at some point it feels like you just want to lose and want to be oppressed and angry. this is spitting in the wind, i know, but i guess getting called a usurer to my own community really got to me when 90% of what i’ve done have been grants to help young people have enough runway to get tech jobs and be on the top of their game without fear or desperation. not for nothing, i’m not going to let one night of leftists radicalize me entirely against them. im still happy to work with or help anyone of any political persuasion. it just feels so. strange, i guess, that i’ve found myself here. it makes my soul sad a bit, and i just wanted to write about it. i’m doing my best for everyone, haters included. it’s all i can do.

🆕 in Sketch: Smart Animate, easy Library replacements, better PDF exports, all-new web app UI, better dev handoff, and so much more! Our latest update brings a bunch of new features and improvements, starting with a new Prototyping feature… Smart Animate We’ve had plenty of requests to bring animation to Prototyping — so we’ve done just that. Smart Animate looks for layers with the same name across different Artboards and animates the changes between them. If you’ve used Magic Move in Keynote, you’ll find this pretty familiar! If you want to see Smart Animate in action, check out our blog post where we’ve run through a few examples of how you can bring it into your designs: skt.ch/9fs8fDj As part of Smart Animate, we’ve added easing and duration options for transitions, and introduced a new transition — dissolve. Easy Library swaps You now have a couple of ways to swap the underlying Library and replace the Components in your document. You can choose to replace all Components, a single Component type or your own custom selection of specific Components. This one is super handy if you’re doing things like theming, or designing for dark and light modes. Color Variables in gradients We know, this one has been a long time coming. There’s not much more to say on this one, but we’re glad it’s here now — and we hope you are too! Better PDF exports You can now choose which Artboards to export, optionally add Artboard titles and render Artboards as bitmaps for more precision. Also, for Workspace documents, you can include all comments in your PDF or as a separate CSV file. Sketch en español Di ‘hola’ a diseñar en español. A partir de ahora, podrás usar Sketch en español e interactuar con la interfaz de manera más familiar e intuitiva. (For non-Spanish speakers: That’s us explaining you can now use Sketch in Spanish.) All-new web app UI Following on from our document view refresh, we’ve given the rest of the web app’s UI an overhaul. There’s a new font (Inter, in case you’re wondering), new iconography, and new thumbnail styling for a greater sense of hierarchy. Better developer handoff Developers using the web app for handoff can now export any layer in a document without it being set to export in the Mac app first. You can set your export size/scale, format and filename prefix/suffix — all within the browser. …and so much more There’s a bunch more improvements in the Mac app, like renaming Artboards on the Canvas, HEIC exports, and click-and-drag support for scrolling areas in prototypes. And of course, a few bug fixes, too. Find out more at skt.ch/updates or open the Mac app now to update!

Most junior designers shouldn’t learn design systems. Your chances of getting into 5% of businesses that need and use them are slim. Those are just the businesses that are loud on socials with their magical “process” but they’re a minority that’s almost impossible to join for juniors anyway. Refocus. Web design with basic components and good handoff skills.

A small number (5%) of companies need a design system. They’re usually larger, hire more people and pay more - that’s why DS are popular among designers. In real work, for the remaining 95% a simple library of styles is enough. Systemic approach to design is great for most projects though, but you don’t need a rocket ship to walk a mile. As a junior you likely won’t come close to a design system for years anyway. Make sure you’re focused on the right things.

the problem I have with @figma is that it's good at "systems" (design systems) but it has NO CONCEPTION of EMERGENCE in the system systems should be able to EMERGE and CRYSTALIZE from a bunch of exploratory creative work. Figma doesn't do this well.

You use borrowed (licensed) software to do work that you don't even own, and then it can be gone in a second. "But the cloud is so convenient!" 🫠
