The aurora borealis at Poolbeg Lighthouse last night. Didn't quite get the aurora in line with the lighthouse this time like October 2024 as the oval was turning over to North America by the time it arrived here but it's nice to get hints of it again here.

Loads of auroral displays seen overnight, including as far south as Cork, Ireland. The storm started at just after local midnight according to our magnetometers (magie.ie). Now we wait for the big one to hit later today/early tomorrow …

"The Inauguration Day Flare"! Huge solar flare (X5) on the occasion of the inauguration of the Irish President. The associated mass ejection now on its way to Earth and likely to produce auroral displays visible from Ireland and other low altitude locations in the coming days.

Solar eclipse #otd 12 Aug 1654, observed in different ways. On the left a man points to a basin with water. Two men view the eclipse with a mirror. Others look at the sun through a piece of glass. The darkened sun has a human face (Rijksmuseum)

Absolutely amazed by how people can predict things so well from more than half a century ago. Taurus-A gets scattered into an arc shape when near the Sun, predicted 1958 by Hewish, now we observed it. Very exciting journey! Full paper: arxiv.org/abs/2506.01632

What are these kilometre hour (kmh) things that @Independent_ie speak about? Presume they mean kilometres per hour (km/h or kph)?

Fingal’s Operations Department has installed a new woodland pathway in the Tolka Valley, stretching approximately 1km from Mill Road, Blanchardstown (near the old entrance to Connolly Hospital) to Dunsink Lane. This scenic path follows the Tolka River through beautiful woodlands and is now accessible for walking and wheeling, offering a peaceful green corridor for all to enjoy. Watch our video to explore this new route and discover the natural beauty of the Tolka Valley. #activetravel #walking #cycling #health #fitness #fingal #TolkaValley #Blanchardstown #tourism @FingalSports @Failte_Ireland @DeptHousingIRL

Today’s #SolarFlare was the first X-class event (the strongest category) since March, and launched an impressive filament west of Earth. The region is rotating out of view, but may still be flare-productive when it rotates back to face us two weeks from now.

G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm levels were observed at 16/2055 UTC due to activity associated with a pair of CMEs that left the Sun on 13 Apr. Solar wind signatures show signs of weakening, however further activity in the G1-G3 (Minor-Strong) range remain possible.
