After the Budget, millions will use online tax calculators. But there's a privacy catch: we tested the seven most popular, and every one sends your income to a server.

The Post Office told wrongly-accused postmasters that their compensation offers were secret, and couldn't be shown to anyone.
That was false.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority was about to prosecute the lawyers responsible. But now it's dropped the case, and won't say why.

ALT Having considered the representations and other information received from the Firm we have decided to close the investigation. Our view is that the Firm exercised proper professional judgment when coming to a decision on the legal position as regards the explanation of the “without prejudice” label in the correspondence that was sent to sub-postmasters relating to the Horizon Shortfall Scheme. The SRA will close the matter with no further action.

I was delighted to learn yesterday of a new cooling technology for English homes.
Followers of this account will know that I have long been interested in awnings. Awnings work by blocking sunlight before it passes through the window, averting greenhouse effects.
Awnings are not as effective as external shutters, but they are far more effective than closing your curtains. On a day like today, they could easily reduce room temperature by 4 degrees celsius, and unlike shutters they do not block the view. They are quite common in France.
The downsides are that they are expensive (over £1000 per awning) and that you are left with an awning pelmet blocking the top of your window for the rest of the year. They also involve drilling into walls, so landlords or conservation area officials might not allow them.
I was walking through Canonbury yesterday when I noticed something new: an awning clipped onto the uppermost sash rail. Investigation revealed that this seemingly obvious device is in fact a completely new invention by a North Londoner called Aimée Daniels, who has set up a small business called Shaded to sell them.
Shaded awnings:
- Cost lest than a tenth of regular drilled awnings;
- Look almost indistinguishable and work just as well;
- Can simply be lifted off for the nine months of the year when we don't need them;
- And do no damage at all to fabric, so are fine for renters, conservation areas and listed buildings.
It seems to me that there are literally millions of people who ought to buy these as soon as possible. In fact it is astonishing that nobody thought of them before.
Gratifyingly but also frustratingly, Shaded is currently sold out of every model. I recommend joining the waiting list. I will be getting a complete suite for every south-, west- and east-facing window!
Part of the blame must lie with the way Apple & Google run the App Stores. Almost every good mobile game mentioned in the replies to this is a PC port.

4/ But this result fires straight at the target via genuinely new ideas:
no "gadgets," no PCPs, no gap amplification
just 3SAT to NCP/CVP, via an elegant, highly novel encoding of the input formula as a collection of Reed-Solomon constraints. 🤩

one of the things that's so good about this is that the exoticizing white guy character is talking about this guy like he's some mystical wise man, while the guy's actions are literally just like.. hanging out, working on his car, the most normal dude things to be doing

tbh, am a bit disappointed that Count Binface's tax policies are the same as every other party.
The fact that this post could apply to almost every ”thought leader” is what makes it - you can’t even tell which particular individual this post is sub tweeting because there are so many possible candidates!

Well, for once, Twitter has done something rather amazing.
We haven’t sold 100 ties in 24 hours…
We have actually sold 1000 TIES in LESS THAN 24 hours, raising over £10,000 for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society!
Thank you all, sincerely. I am shocked.
I cannot believe this has all happened from one tweet but, by some miracle and some hard work over the past 24 hours, Hedgehog Ties will be available for purchase once again!
After quite a few emails and telephone calls to the wonderful staff of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and of Ryder and Amies in Cambridge, I've organised a new production of a Navy Silk Hedgehog Tie, the first in over thirty years!
Ties will cost £45 each with £10 of that £45 going directly towards the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (I do not receive a single penny from the sale of these ties, £35 is purely the cost of production + materials per tie)
Pre-orders will be open for two weeks and, afterwards, the ties will go to production! They should take approx. 10 weeks to be completed.
To pre-order your tie, follow this link: ryderamies.co.uk/shop/britis…
