To celebrate one year of launching into Early Access on Steam, I've released a big update for MADHOUSE today! It's official spooky season and you can play this build live on Steam right now!

People that are only now discovering this particular era of classics and then running to social media to act like they're the first people to ever play them is one of the more obnoxious things I've seen this year, but I'm glad these games are still being talked about.
No shade to this person specifically but I see these types of videos all the time... like, yes, it's really that good. It's widely considered one of the best games ever made, do you really think you have such a unique perspective that somehow you can explain otherwise?

The TIGSource Forum single-handedly spawned the biggest and most successful indie games of all time... Minecraft, Spelunky, The Binding of Isaac, and so many more all started here. Any OGs remember this?

The number 3 has always been such a powerful number in video game entries. The first entry in these games defines the formula, the second usually experiments with it, and then the third installment takes everything its learned and creates unforgettable perfection.

And yes, I know that FF3 is FF6, but the result is still the same here. Here's a few more examples, a couple not using the 3 naming convention, but are nevertheless following the formula of being the best game in their series at the time.

I lived in one of those really cheap hotels outside of SF's Chinatown for over a year back in '07. I put up with so much weird stuff while living there but when the crying guy who lived across the hall from me got bed bugs and they started infesting my room, I got out of there.
I would unironically rather get chlamydia than bed bugs

"What do you mean you haven't played MADHOUSE yet? It's already October 18th! I could have sworn you loved games that embody the spirit of Halloween..."

I feel like this would look sick on a t-shirt.

In general, there's a growing disparity between art with soul and art that's just technically well done. Today we have plenty who are good at illustrating, modeling, etc calling themselves artists, but are they really artists if they can't impact your soul or break new ground?
One thing that always bothered me about many 2D games made in the last 25 years is screen composition. The player character's sprite feeling so tiny on a screen that's just full of negative space gives such a detached and impersonal feeling. I don't connect with games like this.

This is why we'll continue to see media that doesn't convey anything beyond "this is the new version of the same thing," and gaslight ourselves into being excited about it for a while. But those things all kind of blur together into the homogeneity of mediocrity as time goes by.

To visualize, the player character sprite takes up less than 1/10th of the screen's height in this shot. Compared to earlier games in the same series, the PC sprite takes up roughly 1/4th of the screen height, which feels much more appropriate to my eye.

This isn't just a problem with the new Castlevania; I felt the same way about Metroid Dread. Just a ton of extreme PC sprite to screen ratio with tons of undetailed negative space makes games feel super generic to me. Earlier games worked details in the negatives that felt alive.

It's interesting that Square thought that Final Fantasy V would be released in the US as Final Fantasy III according to this early 90s Square newsletter, the Ogopogo Examiner.

Also, is this Final Fantasy Mystic Quest art by Katsuya Terada, the same guy who did early Zelda illustrations for manuals, etc? I know I've seen this style before.

I loved the charming and simplistic pixel art of the early SaGa games. I remember using colored markers to color the black and white sprites when I found them in print, imaging how cool different monsters that used the same sprite would look with unique palettes.

This platform's algorithm, man... Any other artists on here experiencing this?
Someone is working on a mod that adds bots to the MADHOUSE Versus Mode! The human player is in the top left, the rest are bots. This is incredible! Hoping this can be implemented in the actual game, too.
