Well, it was great here while it lasted. I’m moving to the other side, where the sky is bluer. See you over there.

In an article published today in @Nature, the ATLAS collaboration reports how it succeeded in observing quantum entanglement at the LHC for the first time, between fundamental particles called top quarks and at the highest energies yet. ⤵️ atlas.cern/Updates/Press-Sta…

When I vote I don't want unaffordable tax cuts. I want hospital beds. Libraries reopening. Trains that run on time. Kids who aren't too hungry to learn. Rivers that don't run with slurry. Local councils not bankrupted. Politicians who don't venally line their own pockets.

Thought I would summarise why there is so much excitement in the space weather community right now. There’s a monstrous sunspot group on the Sun that’s massive enough to be visible to the naked eye (please use eclipse glasses) 🌞 👓 (1/n)

The 80th birthday cake for British theoretical physicist Peter Higgs, famous for the Higgs boson, was most extraordinary, featuring particle diagrams showing some of the modes by which his eponymous particle might be produced in collisions, along with the 'sombrero potential' associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking.

“Besides his outstanding contributions to particle physics, Peter was a very special person, an immensely inspiring figure for physicists across the world, a man of rare modesty, a great teacher and someone who explained physics in a very simple and yet profound way. (1/2)

Today, the LHC receives the first stable beams of 2024 – a few short weeks after the first #BeamTime of the year and after several weeks of getting the #LHC ready for chapter three of #LHCRun3. While we appreciate the excitement for the solar eclipse next Monday, CERN’s accelerator complex moves on a different schedule than the geometry of the Universe.😉 Find out more: home.cern/news/news/accelera…

For those who don't fully understand what is up with the NHS, here is a thread for you that might help. I'm a consultant physician working as a doctor in the NHS in Yorkshire and Wales for 32 years now. I have experienced the NHS at its best (2008) and its worst (2022).

This is Arnold Sommerfeld and you probably never heard of him. Yet, he was a physicist who pioneered atomic and quantum physics, educating a large number of students. He served as doctoral supervisor and postdoc supervisor to seven Nobel Prize winners. Even more interestingly, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize 84 times, more than any other physicist. He never received the award.
