SOE agent Andrée Borrel was among the first women parachuted into occupied France in 1942. She served as courier and deputy for the Prosper network. Arrested in 1943, she was executed at Natzweiler-Struthof in July 1944. Will you remember her? #heroine #ww2

A soldier in an unmarked grave has been identified as Sheffield-born Lance Corporal Ronald Smirthwaite who was killed in the Netherlands in 1945. For years Lance Corporal Smirthwaite was commemorated as missing with no known grave on the Groesbeek Memorial cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemet…. Following extensive research, MOD investigators confirmed that a grave in Jonkerbos War Cemetery cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemet… was Ronald's. 🔗Discover more on our website. 📷Crown Copyright

#OnThisDay in 1902, Reginald Skelton of Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition observed adult emperor penguins with well-developed chicks on the sea ice at Cape Crozier. It was the first emperor penguin breeding colony ever recorded by humans and one of the most significant discoveries in Antarctic wildlife history, revealing that emperor penguins breed during the harsh Antarctic winter. We ringed 16 Grasshopper Warblers over the weekend. Adults are identified by the worn, abraded wings. In recent years we have noticed some adults starting moulting before they leave for Africa. We never saw it until a few years ago. An interesting change of strategy!

The perfect collection doesn't have to begin with hundreds of stamps. One of the joys of collecting is watching a story unfold issue by issue. With the island's first official stamps released only last year, Sark offers collectors the opportunity to build an affordable, complete collection from almost the very beginning, following the island's history, people and places, as each new issue is released. Have you started your Sark collection yet? We'd love to hear which issue has been your favourite so far. #Sark #Islands #Bailiwick #stamps #collecting #hobbies #philately
