Nations rarely lose control overnight, they usually optimise themselves out of it.
It starts innocently enough, as companies discover that expatriate labour is cheaper, investors like increased margins, and locals remain in senior positions, so everyone assumes the balance is preserved.
But organisations reproduce through networks.
People hire people they know, those people become managers, and gradually the same logic moves upward.
Eventually the CFO asks why the local manager costs three times more than someone who can apparently do the same job.
And the answer is another promotion.
Years later, the country may still own the companies, buildings and infrastructure, but much of the knowledge, recruitment network and organisational influence sits somewhere else.
I have nothing against expatriate talent, I'm expat myself, economies need it, and often benefit enormously from it.
But there is a difference between importing capability and gradually handing over control.

As we can see it playing out in some countries.
