Working on walletbeat, an L2Beat for Ethereum wallets.
Inspired by @VitalikButerin in one of his blog posts.
Who watches the wallets?

How does Ambire stack up against Walletbeat's attributes?
What's good, what could be better, and where are the gaps?

Replying to @TrustWallet
@TrustWallet is now listed on @walletbeat!
Great timing as I heard the team is looking for feedbacks ๐ค

Software supply chain directly impacts wallets' security, and therefore user funds' security. A compromised dependency in a wallet means a compromised wallet, which means compromised users.
@polymutex joins @EFDevcon to explore how should wallets protect against software supply chain attacks

Privacy is where wallets have to make the most progress.
Was true when I started working on Walletbeat, still true now.
Turns out it's not just the hardest part of wallet dev, it's also the hardest part of wallet rating :)
Huge work by @0xMattmatt pouring over network data.
Over the past few weeks, @walletbeat has been finalizing the full ratings of the top 5 wallets
The last piece was Privacy. How well does your wallet protect it?
Most aren't doing well (surprised?)
Plenty of room for improvement! Let's push the wallet ecosystem forward :)
This but for every @Walletbeat attribute

Walletbeat is heading to Mumbai for @EFDevcon!
Weโll be showcasing how we evaluate Ethereum wallets, what goes into their ratings, and how our findings are helping improve the wallet ecosystem.
Come visit us at our booth!
See how wallets get rated, what the data means, and what wallets have changed because of it ๐

> They pulled IP addresses for Etherscan accounts that were tracking node rewards, figuring anyone watching a node was probably running one.
> Then they matched those against Verizonโs addresses for the Southern District.

If you get an email with a PGP-encrypted payload, do not quote the decrypted message verbatim in a cleartext reply.
Twice now that the EF respond to my email and leaks my KYC details this way. ๐ซ
Better opsec required.

Choosing a wallet also means choosing how your privacy and security are handled.
@polymutex leads @walletbeat, a project that helps people examine Ethereum wallets and the choices behind them.
That work makes it easier to ask informed questions about the tools we use, rather than relying on their promises.
Weโre welcoming polymutex to Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress 3.

Beyond Clear Signing: What Else Should Wallets Do?

Interested to see where this ERC goes ๐
My goal: privacy on ethereum for users is THE NORM (and not just bc users took it on themselves to seek out privacy-specific apps/tools)
Step 1: Wallets could all interop on basic stealth address support
BUT FIRST: a PQ-private stealth address scheme

UPDATE: I can confirm that the Ledger supply chain is compromised in Europe as well. @Ledger should initiate an immediate product recall to protect users.
I just purchased a second device from a different Mediamarkt location today, recorded the unboxing process, and discovered spyware once again (video linked in the second tweet).
The device was compromised in the exact same manner, featuring identical modifications (such as additional cables and an LTE module). This indicates its a widespread issue rather than an isolated incident, potentially affecting Ledger inventory across MediaMarkt and Saturn stores throughout Europe (comprising over 1,000 stores across 11 countries).
My initial hypothesis was that these devices were returns that looked unopened to the employees and were just sold again as new however, a MediaMarkt employee confirmed that the device I purchased was not a return, and that returned Ledgers are sent directly back to the manufacturer rather than resold.
Store records show the inventory originated from Aqipa GmbH. While Ledger's CTO was unsure if Aqipa serves as the direct distributor between Ledger and MediaMarkt, it appears to be the case. Given that Aqipa distributes across Europe, any physical retail store receiving stock through them may be at risk.
I sent the first ledger to mark and the second one is going to ledger now, so that they can analyse it.
If you purchased a ledger from anyone other than the official ledger store, make sure to check your device!!
Closing the last-ish mile in @walletbeat's network-traffic-to-privacy-attribute-rating refinement pipeline.
Took too long.
The rest of it won't change effective ratings per the wallets we've captured network traffic for.
Next up is the Kohaku CLI audit, that'll be interesting!
