"People overseas might think that art is something artists create while getting loads of money from the wealthy. If that's how you see it, you're mistaken. The patrons are tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of everyday folks. It's fine if you want to praise manga as art, but it's not being supported by the rich."
漫画はね、「庶民の娯楽」なの。そして、その作り手は「子供の頃に漫画を読んで、自分も漫画家になりたい」と思った人なの。
庶民が庶民の為に描いてるものなの。あなた方は崇高なものに仕立てあげようとしてる。実態は違う。日本の娯楽は庶民由来のものが沢山ある。歌舞伎だって落語だって庶民が楽しむものだ。
それは、身近な人たち、庶民が支えたくれるから仕事として成立する。海外の人は、芸術は芸術家が金持ちから金を沢山貰いながら作ってると思ってるのかも。そう考えてるなら違うよ。パトロンは数万人、数十万人の庶民だよ。漫画を芸術だ、と持ち上げてくれるのは結構だが、金持ちが支えてるわけじゃない。認識にズレがあるのかもしれないね。
