Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for NY-13, revealed that the NYPD officer who shoved her during protests over an ICE shooting in northern Manhattan was a community affairs officer, whose job is to de-escalate tensions.
“There are too many police officers who are engaging in this kind of behavior,” she said.
Avila Chevalier has called for NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to resign. She said Oscar Belgal, who was shot by ICE agents, remains detained in Brooklyn, with a bullet still in his body.

When asked by Hasan Piker if there's any way for NYPD to be seen as not an antagonist force, but as a force that protects the city from ICE, Darializa told Hasan what she witnessed at the protest:
"So many people were pushed around. I heard one officer threaten a woman whose hand brushed another officer by saying, 'Next time they touch any of us, we need to arrest them.'
And so, that's not creating safety for anybody. If NYPD, in theory, is supposed to be a de-escalatory and protective institution, you would think they would have cooler heads on the ground."
