Remarkable that this lengthy statement has not a single word to say about improving palliative and social care.
I have reflected at length about what happened in Parliament on Friday. Thank you to everyone who has contacted me with their heartbreaking personal stories and campaigned on this issue for far too long. I am so sorry. Please see my statement below. Many thanks, Kim

She has confirmed what we all feared.
SHE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY AMENDMENTS! Responding to a question from @Simon4NDorset asking if she will accept amendments to the assisted suicide Bill, Lauren Edwards says she will not. The House were vocal in their disapproval.

A brilliant and detailed speech from @JoshFG, who is on the Health and Social Care Committee, explaining the extent of the crisis in palliative care and the danger of the bill’s auto-commencement clause:

Such an important point from @zubirahmed on feculent vomiting. MPs with little medical knowledge in the last debate repeatedly used examples of avoidable suffering caused by terrible end-of-life care to argue for assisted dying, without being honest re cause of that suffering.
Dr @ZubirAhmed, NHS transplant surgeon, tells the House that patients will rarely be in a state of faecal vomiting if appropriate care is given. Supporters of this Bill want to ignore medical expertise.

I'm sorry to read this about Esther Rantzen, but her health status isn't relevant to the vote today, and I don't think it speaks well of the campaign for medically-assisted suicide that this was made public on the eve of the vote. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyk…

Very powerful speech from @AshleyDalton_MP, who has stage 4 cancer and opposes the assisted dying bill. "I have been terrorised with tales of people vomiting up their own faeces...it is nothing short of irresponsible to scaremonger people like me into believing our deaths will be horrific when with good access to palliative care most deaths are gentle."

Lauren Edwards MP has just made a serious and false allegation about Whitestone Insight on the floor of the House of Commons. She appears to have conflated us with an entirely different polling company. Whitestone Insight has NOT been criticised by the British Polling Council for failing to disclose who funded our research. Ms Edwards should retract her statement and apologise. If an MP has such a tenuous grasp of truth and accuracy when making allegations in Parliament, why should anyone have confidence in her judgement on a matter as momentous — and irreversible — as assisted suicide?

This bill, if it passes, will mean the founding principles of the NHS can be changed. That is a big deal. It will no longer just focus on getting people better - it will help them to die too. Even those in favour of the principle of assisted dying, can surely see the issue with this fundamental change to our NHS? This is not a decision for any MP to take lightly.
MPs are not being asked only to endorse assisted dying in principle, but to force this Bill into law unchanged. It would then automatically come into force, regardless of whether the NHS was ready with the necessary staff, training & safeguards. telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

“Why” is the question. Why not involve the coroner? Why not ensure everyone asking for AD has a full psychosocial assessment and palliative care assessment? Why not mandate in-person assessments (rather than virtual)? Why not mandate asking the person *why they want to die*? Why not strengthen monitoring and reporting processes? Why not inform family by default? Why not specify that assisted death is not a medical treatment? Why not involve the MDT at the start? Why?
The assisted death Bill removes coroners from assisted deaths. Why? In every single constituency, the British public think coroners, who investigate all unusual deaths, should also be involved in checking all assisted deaths.

Some of my colleagues have been told the government will not roll out the assisted dying bill until the NHS and the Gvt is ready and it’s safe. The Bill before us on Friday makes this IMPOSSIBLE. Auto commencement in the Bill means if it passes, it happens. Ready or not.

Parliamentary scrutiny has inarguably exposed unresolved problems in the Bill since the last time we were called upon to vote. This should be of significant concern to members across the House, irrespective of position on the principle of assisted dying. labourlist.org/2026/09/mps-w…

The proposed assisted dying bill will be an absolute car crash if brought in, in the UK. The NHS already fails to keep elderly & disabled people safe. Why oh why would we give it the power to end life when so often cannot even safely provide basic medical care? Write to your MP.
🚨 Email your MP now: righttolife.org.uk/sept11vot… Only 12 MPs need to switch to defeat the revived assisted suicide Bill on Friday 11 September. It takes just 30 seconds. Ask your MP to VOTE NO.
