occasionally a friend will ask why i wanted to explore the joan crawford catalogue. for decades, joan crawford was the movie-goer’s definitive reference point for ‘movie star’. her career transformed the public’s conception of movie stardom as not having to be seasonal by nature.

it took over three and a half years but i think i really understand the breadth of her career and her placement in the hollywood economy on a level that i could only grasp at beforehand. i have a lot more to process but i am so glad i did this.

there is so much more to her career than shoulder pads and borderline personality disorder. so much more to say but i’ll leave it at that for now

Sometimes I wonder how directly these deals are made, and how often the star plainly reaches out to People for negotiations vs. People having an agenda-setting list in mind and then making the final call based on who is desperate enough to agree to every detail they want.
Noah Wyle named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2026.

The very final scene of Joan Crawford’s movie career is her wordlessly turning away from the camera and walking away from the crowd. The only moment of poignancy within 300km of the film’s production, but it lands. A career that began in the silent era ends with silence.
double feature of EYES and TROG - figured her spielberg tv movie would be a good lead-in for the last ever joan crawford movie. genuinely pretty emotional that i have now reached the end of the joan watch. 60 films later, three years of meditations on joan crawford now at an end.

There’s not much in Trog that is handled with anything approaching ‘care’ or ‘human emotion’ but right at the end they manage to achieve five seconds of genuine brilliance by having her reject the spectacle and walk behind the camera van, out of our lives. A piteous moment.

The usage of consume is really giving away the game here lmfao
I think Nuzlockes have ruined how people online consume Pokemon.

Decided to save Trog for after dinner. Eyes has an insanely good showing by Spielberg here, his youthful understanding of cruelty is far more enticing than the sugary malice that oozes out of most of his later works. The blackout scene is a real show of star power for him & Joan.

i am not completely done bc i have some of her silents to watch, though they are both shorter and a little bit more contentious in terms of being actually available vs. merely surviving. but this viewing marks the end of her era as the public’s dominant conception of ‘movie star’

New Zealand has produced some fine minds. It has also produced some different minds

obviously OJ crystallised the concept and became the eternal point of comparison, but have there been any true ‘trials of the century’ since then? or has the concept become commonplace as to be meaningless because of the media ecosystem changes brought about by the OJ trial
