Want to know why Michelle Donelan was forced to make an extraordinary apology to two academics earlier today?
It's a bizarre tale involving Policy Exchange, a secret government dossier and a libel case paid for by the taxpayer
A short thread (1/10)

UK science minister Michelle Donelan apologises & pays damages after academic’s libel action. ‘It’s extraordinary that a minister should be guided by a lobby group into making serious false allegations about private citizens without any due diligence.” theguardian.com/politics/202…

NEW: Michelle Donelan's legal bill - picked up by the taxpayer - for wrongly accusing an academic of having sympathy for Hamas cost *£15,000*.

We spoke to everyone about students' unions except students and students' unions

ALT Our response to the Office for Students (OfS) consultation on the OfS’s approach to regulating students’ unions on free speech matters

ALT This response was developed in partnership with the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA), Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA), the Association of Managers of Student Services in Higher Education (AMOSSHE) and the Committee of University Chairs (CUC), and with support from an advisory group with representation from across the sector.

We have a postdoc position available for 3-4 years, if anyone is interested in coming to rainy Oxford! The lab is diverse, friendly and very supportive. I don't travel much, still tinker with microscopes, and have an open door policy. DM me if interested! jobs.ac.uk/job/DGH876/postdo…

Stator is not merely a cell annotation tool. Here, we demonstrate cell states can be highly *non-localised* (ie non-proximal) in expression space across multiple subtypes. So the real question is: what would be achieved by low-dim visualisation, and what question would it answer?

My inbox just filled up with professors Replying All to a mistaken email and I feel like I'm back in 1999.

Disturbing visual similarities aside, which is worse? A laughably flawed AI anatomical hallucination that nobody took seriously, or a massive NIH project misusing UMAP hallucinations that wildly exaggerate genetic differences between races?
Everyone going apoplectic about someone publishing Midjourney hallucinations in a @frontiersin paper, but they're totally fine with people publishing T-SNE hallucinations in @nature.

Students won't get involved, students won't volunteer, we have to do things for students, etc etc a long train journey thread
Interesting insight into student motivation. We've a group leaderboard in our coding module for engagement with online material. The winning groups get tokens to exchange for donuts. But several students prefer to keep the token as a record of achievement than get the donut.*
