Extraordinary testimony from the @NSWLabor Police Minister (Yasmin Catley), responsible for issuing gun licences. Almost a year after the Bondi Massacre she’s being asked how permission was given to the Islamist killers to own weapons, when one of them was on a terrorist watch-list. Her responses will shock you.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned this. I did this interview in early sep. had no idea it was coming out til this evening. my interview was cut to a few snippets but at least you can see Larry with me briefly.
One of the most famous addresses in the world, 10 Downing Street in London, is home not just to prime ministers, but also to a 19-year-old tabby cat named Larry. @HollyMAWilliams looks at how the official pet of the British leader’s residence and Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office has become a favorite to the press — and a political fixture whose nine lives have so far outlasted five prime ministers.

78 admitted patients have been waiting more than 4 hours for a hospital bed in our adult EDs. This significantly reduces ED capacity to access & manage new patients! @BBoyerMP @ANMFSA @acemonline @sasmoa4doctors

One of the two wisteria arbours at Adelaide Botanic Garden. This was three weeks ago so it doesn't look like this now. It only looks wonderful for a short time each year.

I’ve just received a DM from an anaesthetist regarding the #Northerngeneral hospital in Sheffield Does anyone know how long it takes to get from the anaesthetic department at the NGH to the theatres most commonly staffed by PAAs in the day unit? #cappuccini

I don't think it should be impossible, but I think it needs a careful distinction between true negligence or malice versus simple error. Misreading a blood test result should definitely not be in the same category as disabling emergency buzzers or withholding pain relief.

Sadly, I think you are right. There really isn’t much else left. It’s important however that the right people are targeted and that those at or near the bottom of the pile are not scapegoated for failures not of their making.

It's a shame this is behind a paywall, because Sarah's story demonstrates so many of the fundamental problems with maternity services. Her book, This Did Hurt, out later this month, is brilliant. dailymail.com/health/article…

Big banks are pouring billions into their sprawling Indian operations. The objective of business is to make a profit, deliver services & remain competitive. Shareholders expect returns & customers expect efficient, affordable services. And when it becomes too expensive, too difficult or too restrictive to operate competitively, businesses inevitably look for alternatives. Offshoring is one of those alternatives. And to a large degree, Australians have brought this on themselves. Harsh? Perhaps. But we cannot continually demand higher wages, more benefits, greater regulation & more obligations on business without recognising that all of these come at a cost. I’m not suggesting banks should be beyond criticism, particularly given their substantial profits. Nor am I dismissing the consequences for Australian workers. But we cannot ignore commercial realities simply because we don’t like the outcomes. There is a price to making Australia an increasingly expensive place to do business. And sometimes that price is Australian jobs. afr.com/companies/financial-…
