There has been a 227% increase in the number of students who are registering for Irish courses at Queen’s University Belfast this year. As a result of this new demand, The Language Centre has put on extra classes. One of the most important developments is the Irish Language Residential Scheme, a place where students live together through the medium of Irish. It creates a natural speaking environment and a friendly community between speakers from various backgrounds. The scheme started for the first time in 2022. "A daily effort is made here to normalise the Irish language. We are starting out on the revival of Irish – not only in the University, but in society in general. It is heard in the media, in music, in movies, on social media. "The most important thing is to give space and respect to Irish speakers." It was lights, camera, action for our first film collaboration at Queen's MediaLab. 🎬 Working with Kinetek Ltd, an immersive media company, the MediaLab's CaptureLab was the primary location for the shooting of Underscore, an ambitious and immersive feature film. Written and Directed by former Queen’s Teaching Fellow in Film, Hugh McGrory, Underscore tells the story of a Granddaughter and Grandfather as they confront the end of the world. “This partnership with @kinetek_ai is very special. Just a few weeks after the MediaLab opened, the Kinetek team were the first to use the facilities, and it opened up and validated the work we are doing here.
