This has been a good week for rail in Canterbury. Regional Mayors agreed to keep investigating rail for Canterbury. @rafmanji and TOP have campaigned on reinstating the Southerner train and for a rail service between Rolleston and Rangiora. 1/

Removing GST from food sounds good but it’s not the best way to support families with cost of living issues. Direct cash transfers are much simpler and more effective as is a land value tax to improve housing affordability @EricCrampton with the evidence 👇
Once you grant an exemption for one worthy-sounding thing, it is hard to resist the call for more. It would be much better to achieve progressivity by adjusting income tax rates - Newsroom Pro - $ - newsroom.co.nz/pro/taking-gs…

3 Waters juggernaut continues to be an absolute train wreck 😬. nzherald.co.nz/business/thre… Three Waters cost blowout expected to hit $1 billion in ‘mega-bureaucracy’ – at Wellington City, New Zealand
I have been writing about the dangers of excessive leverage in the proposed debt financing of Three Waters for some time, drawing attention to the problems that similar financial models have created for the English water utility sector. Now the UK government is making plans for the potential collapse of Thames Water under a mountain of debt. This is the risk that New Zealand’s Labour government is proposing that the country take for its entire water network. As Thames Water demonstrates, the risk is not theoretical, it is very real. We simply cannot afford to make the same mistake in NZ.
