Airtel’s routers don’t allow you to modify the DNS server. The firmware is designed to lock this out. This used to be available for modification some time ago, so the lock-out is recent-ish. Since DNS is likely not DoH, they know every domain you connect to.

Apparently you can change the DNS setting by using browser devtools, but the next firmware update will reset any changes. Firmware updates happen frequently, even as frequently as once per day. They really don’t want you to configure a custom DNS server.

The solution seems to be to run your own router, and configure their router to run in ‘bridge mode’, which I guess makes it work as a modem. Doable, but definitely not for everyone. So Airtel not only decides who you can connect to, they can also track the sites you connect to.

Got a scam call from someone pretending to be from @mahanagargas But the scammer had certain details about me that can only exist with MGL. This strongly indicates that they’ve had a DB leak.

Modi holding the camera too close to his face with the fish-eye lens is how I imagined Big Brother from 1984.

Had visited this place a few years ago on my drive through historical sites across the country. What’s surprising is, for how important the place is to history, it’s almost invisible. There’s a row of houses next to it, parking almost blocks the road, and there were no visitors.

Take for example the Heliodorus Pillar near modern Sanch. Archaeologists digging around its base have uncovered possibly the earliest Hindu temple that has ever been discovered.

And yes, it used to be called 'Khamba baba', which, let's admit, is hilarious. Most of it was buried, and locals were worshipping the capital at the top. Because faith. Archaeologists had to be very tactful in convincing the locals to allow excavation.

The pillar is by a Greek ambassador. The inscriptions invoke Vasudeva and praise a king. It was obviously for currying political favour. It's pretty jarring that people in the past mixed religion and politics for personal gains. Thankfully we don't do that anymore.

AI slop YouTube video scripts. Because here's the thing. It isn't engaging. It isn't interesting. It isn't good. It's just regurgitating the same pattern. Over and over again. Like it has no mind. Like it has no soul. And people notice. The lack of depth. The lack of substance.

...orders from the local police that no solo travellers should be allowed to stay. Apparently, some 20 years ago some solo traveller had committed su*cide in one of their hotels, so now the police has disallowed solo travellers from staying overnight.

Called up MMT support and they confirmed that no hotel in town allows solo travellers. So, late in the night I had to hunt for a highway hotel outside the town's jurisdiction. Solo travellers are risky because they could commit su*cide! What a strange thought! Strange place.

...the western coast, but I had heard of the WB government's investments in developing the town of Mandarmani as a beach town, so I decided to give it a try. Made bookings on MMT as one does, and drove to the resort. At the reception, the hotelier asked me where my...

Since Bengal is in the news, here's a little story. Covid was waning down, and I decided to take the opportunity to drive across the country. In West Bengal, I decided to look for a beach town to spend a night. Beaches on the eastern coast are not as well developed as...

Just learning to do some 3D modelling for 3D printing. It seems like the most time-consuming part of creating a model is using the orbit controls to pan-zoom around the model to admire how it looks. Just me? Ok.

Relistening the Project Hail Mary audiobook in preparation for the movie. When talking about time dilation: “Isn’t it great that God created relativity? It’s like he’s inviting us to explore the universe!” Some things never change no matter the scientific progress.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is built more-or-less on the same track as ancient trade routes, carrying (mostly Roman) goods from the Mumbai ports inland to Andhra, as evidenced by Buddhist caves (ancient truckers stops) dotted along the way. Satvahana empire.

Elephanta Caves is the only Hindu rock-cut caves in the country – the rest are all Buddhist / Jain. Elephanta has probably the oldest surviving image of Shiva. (Happy to stand corrected if I’m wrong)

"Excursion"? Did he mean to say "incursion"? Reminds me of the prescient words of the great philosopher Samuel L Jackson: "English, m'f*r. Do you speak it?"
