📣Really excited that my first first-author paper is finally out in @NeurobiolStress! We highlight the role of VP GABA cells beyond reward and in aversively motivatated behavior.⚡️ Ty to co-first Maricela Martinez, and @svmahler, who let me have fun discovering VP mechanisms! 🧠
Hey ventral pallidum fans, our new paper shows #VP GABA neurons, known for reward, also regulate aversive motivation! Inhibiting them w/#DREADDs 🔼 active or passive defenses to threats, likely via LHb.
Congrats to @ramirezneurosci & Marty Martinez!

Please help save Logan, our Frenchie we rescued 2 years ago. He is in need of an emergency staphylectomy. 💔 He’s turning 6 in November. Sharing also helps. 🙏🏽 gofund.me/806bc57b5
Excited that my first #ACNP is in Nassau, Bahamas!! 🇧🇸 … I suppose I will have to leave the beach and present my research on the role of the ventral pallidum in social seeking and social v. drug choice this Wednesday at 5pm. Come say hi at poster W264!! #acnp2026 🏖️🏝️
New Preprint!🚨 Silencing VP GABA neurons exaggerates defensive responses to threat cues ⚡️and activates the LHb, indicating a novel role beyond appetitive processing.🧠
Ty to all authors especially my now twitterless co-first, Maricela Martinez. @svmahler biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Secretary Lutnick: You are a billionaire.
Maybe your mother-in-law wouldn't complain if she didn't get her Social Security check, but tens of millions of seniors struggling to survive would. They're not fraudsters. They earned it.
How out of touch are you not to realize that?

My younger sister has CF. Her whole life we have emotionally prepared for her to not make it past her 30s. Now, I will get to see her live a long life, maybe start a family or dive into a career.
It makes me sad how we've villainized biomedical science when it has changed lives.

These NIH grants studied the biological effects of hormones in animals not transgender identity. Research on hormone treatments advances scientific understanding, but sex-related biology in animals does not equate to gender studies. Misrepresenting this fuels misinformation.
Yesterday, @NIH cancelled seven grants for transgender experiments on animals including:
- $532K to “use a mouse model to investigate the effects of cross-sex testosterone treatment”
- $33K to test “feminizing hormone therapy in the male rat”

It's clear that many do not understand what @NIH-funded research does to improve health. It's time to revive a study published 10 years ago that provides incredible information about this. link in the comment
Every single new drug approved by the FDA from 2010–2016 was built on NIH-funded research—that’s all 210 drugs. But what the public sees is just the tip of the iceberg.
Pharma takes credit for the final product, but beneath each drug developed, there are ~20 years of basic research, and 90% of the cost is from basic research funded by the NIH, which discovers drug targets, understands disease mechanisms, and creates life-saving treatments.
Figuring out how cancer evades the immune system, how addiction rewires the brain, and how heart disease develops is the role of the NIH, creating the foundation for the breakthrough drugs that come 20 years later, and the NIH does all that with only 0.8% of the US budget.
Without NIH, there would be no cancer immunotherapy, no anti-overdose medication, no anti-heart attack or stroke medication, no cutting-edge treatments.
If NIH funding is cut, the iceberg will melt. That means fewer cures, more suffering, and more lives lost.
The science beneath the surface keeps us afloat.
Invest in NIH. Invest in life

This is what is scary about being a trainee in science right now who really wants a career running a lab at a university. The grant I’ve been working on for half a year just got cut. I want to teach, do research, and inspire new scientists and now the country is anti-science.
Replying to @PutrinoLab
these are going to be hardworking folks who put their faith in a system they were told was stable. These are folks that were taught from the earliest points in their careers that if they sacrificed and followed the rules, they would succeed. Now the rules have changed. But plz 4/
