Some actionable unsolicited advice for first-year PhD students:
1- when you are confused or lost, SAY IT OUT LOUD. You are very smart. If something is confusing it is not a sign of weakness to point it out so that it can be explained better. Alot of research communication is bad.

My PhD advisor taught me *a lot*. I wrote down a few of the lessons to pass them on to my own PhD students.

The internet wouldn’t exist without the talents of disabled people. Vint Cerf is a VP at Google & one of the Fathers of the Internet. He’s also deaf. I showed him my braille tech when we met in 2019, & this year we shared a stage. @vgcerf thanks for advocating for accessibility!

ALT I’m sitting with my braille computer on my lap reading while facing Vint Cerf who is sitting next to me typing on a wireless keyboard. He’s an older white man wearing glasses and a brown suit. I’m a Black woman wearing a blue dress, and beside me Mylo’s leash and harness are visible at the edge of the photo.

Is it harder to get long or short papers into IMC? Anecdotal knowledge for long, now @MatthewLuckie shared data: it is harder to get short papers accepted to IMC than long papers. Recently, the number of short paper submission is thus declining / long increasing. @ACM_IMC2021

Hey Tweeps: one of my PhD students had emergency surgery Monday to remove a large brain tumor. Another of my students organized a GFM to help support him, his wife, and their baby as he recovers. If you're willing and able, every little bit helps: gofund.me/d922f9f9
