Atlanta social media personality Shawty Dred, whose real name is Mercedes Reshard New, has been indicted in an alleged multimillion-dollar SNAP fraud scheme. The 39-year-old was indicted October 7, 2026, on 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count each of SNAP fraud and illegal transactions with access devices. He was arrested October 13 and remains in federal custody. Prosecutors allege that between January 2020 and July 2026, New controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts created using stolen identities. Authorities say approximately $4.6 million was deposited into those accounts and roughly $4 million was withdrawn. He allegedly processed more than $660,000 through his business, Shawty Dred LLC. After its SNAP authorization was revoked in November 2025, police allegedly caught him selling benefits and seized 14 EBT cards; investigators say he subsequently requested replacements. Federal officials also highlighted Instagram posts showing private jets, luxury vehicles and stacks of cash, alleging the scheme helped fund his lavish lifestyle. The FBI and USDA’s Office of Inspector General are investigating. The charges are allegations, and New is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
