It is really important to extend Rational Medical thinking and the culture of stewardship into surgery. Reducing low value interventions should be the central priority for commissioners and designers of healthcare. economist.com/science-and-te…

This is brilliant news. At last there will be strengthening of awareness of risks of antidepressants being paddled on the basis of Bad Science by Big Pharma.
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr

Good to see the MHRA are going to make information about persistent sexual dysfunction and suicidal ideation induced by antidepressants more prominent. I hope it will be more than a line or two in the small print of the drug package inserts which no one reads anyway.

All young women who are considering taking an antidepressant should be shown this graph, and informed about the pregnancy complications associated with taking antidepressants.
NEW STUDY: Antidepressant use is associated with lower pregnancy rates & higher miscarriage rates among women receiving fertility care. Serotonin plays a crucial role in fertility & early pregnancy. SSRIs disrupt the serotonin system and, thus, would be expected to have an impact. This is an observational study, not an RCT, and the authors note that confounding by indication (depression) may contribute. But we have randomized animal studies that demonstrate effects on fertility & increased pregnancy loss. I think the entirety of the evidence supports the conclusion that the SSRI chemicals do have a chemical impact on fertility and early pregnancy, and I believe that patients and the public should be properly informed regarding this. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Patients are already searching for answers. The role of the clinician isn’t always to dismiss what they find — it’s to help them understand the evidence behind it.
25
“What does the evidence say?” Important question. But perhaps not the final one. “Does this evidence apply to the patient in front of me?” That difference is where evidence-based medicine becomes patient-centred medicine. #RationalMedicine rational-medicine.com
