Sell your car for cash and deposit it, and your bank reports you to the federal government. Move $5,000 in a way a teller doesn’t like, and the bank can file a suspicious activity report on you. If anyone at the bank tells you it happened, they’ve committed a federal crime. You find out when your account gets closed, if you ever find out at all. Banks spend $59 billion complying with the Bank Secrecy Act. They filed 28.7 million reports on Americans. Those reports tipped off 275 investigations. It started in 1968, when a Texas congressman named Wright Patman held a hearing about secret Swiss bank accounts. Patman claimed Americans were using them for tax evasion, stolen Treasury bills, corporate kickbacks and securities fraud. His star witness, U.S. attorney Robert Morgenthau, told Congress that the millions of Americans vacationing in Europe were finding foreign banks ready to help them commit crimes. Members of Congress warned that the bill would gut the privacy of bank customers, choke honest commerce and hand the Treasury Secretary far too much power. They were right. It passed anyway. Richard Nixon signed the Bank Secrecy Act in October 1970, twenty months before his own men were caught breaking into the Watergate. Treasury set the reporting line at $10,000 in 1972 and has never moved it. That is about $80,000 in today’s money after inflation, so the net drops lower every year Congress does nothing. In 1986 Congress made it a crime to keep your deposits under the line on purpose, which means the line catches you whether you cross it or not. By 1996 banks were filing suspicious activity reports on their own customers for anything over $5,000 that looked off to them. After September 11 the Patriot Act bolted eleven more sections onto the law, and last year the GENIUS Act extended the same surveillance to stablecoins. In 2012 banks filed 1,720 suspicious activity reports for every IRS investigation that came out of them. Over the next decade the reports nearly doubled and the investigations fell by half. Last year FinCEN ordered businesses in thirty zip codes along the southern border to report cash transactions as small as $200. One small business estimated it would go from filing nine reports a week to 50,000. A federal court in Texas found the order likely violated the Fourth Amendment and said it was like using a blunderbuss to target a fly. FinCEN answered by raising the line to $1,000 and stretching it over 126 zip codes and 3.2 million people. In 1974 Justice Thurgood Marshall wrote in dissent that forcing a bank to photocopy your checks gives the government as much of a hand in the seizure as if it had sent someone to break into your home and copy them there. Even the justices who upheld the law warned that your financial records reveal your activities, your associations and your beliefs. Two years later, in United States v. Miller, the Supreme Court ruled that the Fourth Amendment does not protect your bank records at all. Repeal the Bank Secrecy Act.

As of today, the Epstein Files Transparency Act was signed into law 234 days ago. And your reminder that the reason they haven't been released is because Donald Trump's name is mentioned more than 38,000 times. The United States government is protecting a pedophile and rapist.

Welp. It started with AV laws that most of you red-state idiots voted for because you thought it would only ever affect consumers of adult content. You created the precedent, and now ya'll are gonna be bitching about it when it gets to you. Told you so.
Alabama passed a law, 138 votes to nothing, that makes every phone user in the state prove their age before downloading a single app. A 45-year-old who wants a news app has to hand ID to Google first. Existing accounts get no pass either. Every one of them must be verified by October 2027. Teenagers will need a parent’s sign-off to install Wikipedia, Duolingo or a Bible app, and kids without a parent to ask get locked out completely. Apple, Google and Amazon’s lobby group has now sued to block it on First Amendment grounds. reclaimthenet.org/alabama-is…

“why is everywhere understaffed but we have an unemployment problem?” Covid taught industries they could function, albeit poorly, with a skeleton crew and there is no economic incentive to do otherwise. That's why enshittification is so rampant at the same time.

My friend just drove to Mexico for the day to get a $360 dental procedure that would’ve cost him $5,000 in the U.S. This wasn't at a roadside clinic either. It was a state of the art facility with great reviews. Apparently a ton of Americans are going there. A four hour drive to save 93% on healthcare. Something needs fixing over here.

ICE raids church in Puerto Rico—as parishioners line up to confess. "Agents were standing with their long guns." "He was just about to shoot them." "Honestly—it shook me to my core." Church also serves students of the parish elementary school. "3 agents climbed the stairs to the elementary school where the children are waiting to be picked up by their parents!" said another witness. "They even went so far as to search them in the bathrooms." ICE claims that they were looking for construction workers who fled another scene. But the workers at the church were actually employed by FEMA—a U.S. Federal government agency. The incident occurred at the San Antonio de Padua Parish church in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico.

Greenville, NC: A mother with a baby at home was woken at 3:20 a.m. after a nearby shooting (bullets nearly hit two kids). Police wanted her Ring doorbell footage. She said the camera was dead. Sgt. Jennifer Umphlet threatened to rip it off the wall, get a warrant, and keep her up all night. Officers then entered without a warrant, detained her for “not cooperating,” and (per her account) used her face to unlock and search her phone. Nothing found—she wasn’t a suspect. The actual shooters were later charged without her video. Umphlet was placed on leave; public records later showed she was no longer employed. This is what happens when “can we see your camera?” turns into forced entry and detention of ordinary people.

The guy who compared a Trump rally to Jonestown on live Fox News was invited by the Trump campaign. They called his work phone on Monday and asked him to come. His name is Tom Hoyle. He's 57 and runs a small custom printing shop in Charlotte called MadPark Designs with his business partner. He's hated Trump since 1989, back when he was a sophomore in college. And he really, really doesn't like getting sales calls on the shop line, from anybody. So when the rally people called, he said yes. He even signed up with his real name and contact info, because he wanted it on the record that they invited him. Then he had to get through the door. A private security guy asked him straight up if he was a Trump supporter. Tom told him he supports the Constitution, then started talking about his shirt, which was for an old death metal band called Death. He kept going about the history of Florida death metal until the guard gave up and let him in. His plan going in was honestly pretty juvenile. He and a buddy he grew up with figured he'd wait a few minutes into the speech and yell something filthy. Then a Fox News reporter, Lucas Tomlinson, found him standing off by himself and asked if he could interview him live. Tom thinks a white guy with a big beard and a ball cap was pretty much exactly what they were looking for. He told himself he wasn't going to cuss on national TV, so he made it up on the spot. He says the first line and then just waits. The reporter goes "Wait, the Jonestown Massacre?" and that's when he finishes it. He told The Handbasket he picked that up from Billy Crystal, who said on Letterman back in the '80s that you always let the other guy set up your punchline. Tomlinson set it up for him perfectly. A few minutes later some men who said they were Secret Service pulled him aside. He asked if this was about the concession stand, because it closed early and he was starving. They didn't love that and walked him out. On his way out he passed the guard from the front door and told him, hey man, you didn't vet me too well. Think about how many people had a shot at stopping this. The campaign's call list found him. The signup form had his name. A guard questioned him to his face. A Fox crew put him on live TV. Every one of them took one look at the beard and the hat and filled in the rest. That's how almost all of this screening works. Asking somebody what they actually believe takes time, and looking at them takes a second, so everybody just looks. The one check that actually caught him came after he'd already said it on national TV.
Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

David Jolly: The other side of the aisle likes to throw around the term socialism. I just call it cheaper insurance. But tell me what a hurricane fund currently is that bails out our insurance companies? It sounds a whole lot like socialism to me. What does it mean when we give Elon Musk billions of dollars of tax credits and we don't tax his profits? Sounds a whole lot like socialism to me. What about a president who says, hey, if you vote for me and elect my team, we're going to give you a $5,000 check? What about a president who removes Maduro but supports Delce in Venezuela? What about a president who suggests we should allow investment in the hospitality industry on the island of Cuba? What about a president who invited Vladimir Putin to South Florida to come to Miami in December, a leader who has backed the Maduro regime, the Sandinistas, and the Cuban regime? They don't even understand economic theory on the other side of the aisle, folks. They're just arguing labels to try to scare us and divide us.

A BADGE IS NOT A LICENSE TO BRUTALIZE. Without video evidence, imagine how ICE would claim the agent was attacked by a vicious protester. Blocking an ICE vehicle does not erase your constitutional rights. Reasonable force may be lawful. Excessive force is not. Premiums aren’t just going up on their own, costs are rising because of decisions Republicans in Congress made: The GOP gutted Medicaid and then allowed ACA enhanced tax credits to expire. Over 5 million Americans had to drop their coverage as a result. But uninsured people still get sick. And when they end up in emergency rooms because they couldn’t afford to get preventive care, that cost gets absorbed by everyone. That means hospitals have to pay more to provide care, and working families then pay more for their health care coverage to make up the difference. If Congressional Republicans had been willing to work with Democrats to keep Americans insured, we could have avoided this. But the GOP’s number one priority was tax cuts for the rich, no matter what that meant for the rest of us.
