I don’t think the reindeers actually pull Santa’s sleigh. Hear me out: There are ~2.3B children worldwide, with ~2.5 kids per family, that’s 920M families with kids. Let’s assume 30% of them set out some sort of treat for Santa, like milk and cookies: that’s 276M serving of treats. Using one glass of milk and four cookies as a reference, that means each treat serving is about 500 kcal. Now, I’ve never met the guy, but he seems well mannered enough that he would not reject a treat for his hard work, so Santa is consuming 138B kilo-calories on Christmas Eve. Now, Santa is a big guy, let’s say 300lbs. Here’s the problem: if he consumes 138B kcal worth of snacks, that would raise his body temperature by ~1.2B degrees Kelvin. That would mean, after the first few minutes of delivering presents, Santa would set every house he visited on fire through radiative heat transfer. But that obviously doesn’t happen, so there must be another explanation: Santa propels the sled, not the reindeer. And that 300lbs? It must be lean muscle mass. Merry Christmas Everyone!

My university just announced that it’s dumping Blackboard, and there was much rejoicing. Why is Blackboard universally reviled? There’s a standard story of why "enterprise software" sucks. If you’ll bear with me, I think this is best appreciated by talking about… baby clothes!

Questions that show you care about a software engineer's work. Wrong answers only. I'll start: "Was this all generated by ChatGPT?"

Wow. @substack experimented with pricing, reducing it by 1 cent, so e.g. instead of $10/month, do $9.99/month. The result? A significant decrease for the pricing ending with .99. Which goes against conventional pricing wisdom!! Why it's worth running experiments!
