Rest in Peace, My Friend Jumbo Beretta. This one truly hurts. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Jumbo, a good friend whom I was honored and privileged to know for nearly 40 years. I send my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace old friend.

In this piece from Tampa parks he talks about interest in Broadway is what led him to wrestling. Not a guy who one would associate with “theater kid wrestling.”

I interviewed Jumbo for my book about the Malenko family. He'd really been through the wringer the last few years. Really interesting and talented guy. His true passion was singing and dancing! Loved his run in various UWF promotions in the late 80s and 90s. RIP

If someone wants to get him (and see lots of great matches) the best intro possible is to watch everything he did everywhere in 1985. JCP, Florida, AJPW, Hawaii, WCCW, Mid South, Houston, Memphis, and sometimes on consecutive nights.

The weird thing about Ric Flair discussion is that everyone hones in on 89 because it serves as an easy focal point when his footage is so much more interesting and varied in, let’s say, 84. People just gravitate to JCP/NWA/WCW because it’s easier, more familiar, and “canonical.”

I'm sure I left some stuff out since I did this quickly. For instance, there's a clip of a Duggan match in there somewhere and he did a little more on TV. But it's a good starting point.

Some won't love it and that's ok too. I think most will find plenty to enjoy. I'm ok with wherever people land on Flair (or anyone else). But this is the best year to understand what the case for him even is.
