So I just did a thing. I was just on the Dr. Laura Schlessinger Show promoting my books Bad Dates and 128 Small Things You Can Do Right Now To Make the World a Better Place.
One day @johnondrasik will not just like my posts, but he will follow me, and until he does I will keep posting about this amazing song he wrote.
And let's face it, I will continue to post about this song, and his others, even after he follows me, because there are few songwriters like him anymore.
The Riddle was released in 2006, the year my father died. The song was released in May, my father passed away in late September. We buried him in October.
We had a complicated relationship, and yet somehow John managed to encapsulate it so beautifully in just under 4 minutes without knowing either of us.
I've been writing about my father my whole life and I have never been able to tie it up so neatly. And I actually knew him.
The whole song makes me happy/sad/grateful/longing but none of it so much as the lyrics "Hey, dad" because that is how I started each call I had with him.
And even though we disagreed about a lot of things, he always picked up the phone.
There were only two idols the boys on my block/in my generation looked up to - Evel Knievel and Mohammad Ali.
That was it. Those were the choices.
And it wasn't a choice. You could ride your banana seat BMX bike off a ramp and jab your best friend in the face, you didn't have to pick one.
And none of them did.
Every American man aged 60 - 65 knows every word to this song.

What stupid question should I ask tonight to get the most engagement?
Should I go with the classic - "If you're GenX, did you drink out of the hose?"
Or should I go with the more friendly "You can bring back one" with a collage of our favorite dead icons?
Please put Kamala Harris back in the bottle or wherever she's been for the last two years. I cannot listen to her voice and Amy Klobuchar's in the same cycle.
I have only stayed in a couple Airbnbs but when I did I cleaned up after myself because I have been brought up in cabin culture.
Everyone in Minnesota has a cabin, or knows someone who has a cabin that lets you use it from time to time.
You leave it as you found it so you get invited back.
Now that I think about it, this is #53 in my book 128 Small Things You Can Do Right Now To Make The World A Better Place.
Here are the links to the books we talked about on her show. These are affiliate links, I make a small commission when you click on them.

It's just Skynet becoming self aware. We've known this day was coming since 1984.
I just learned I was put in NextDoor jail over a month ago. I'm out now. Not sure what I did, but someone reported me. I have been warned to be better.
Which would you rather see - a before and after of my most recent jalapeño cheddar sourdough or the loofahs I'm drying?
