bounce and @vivekanandahr have gone through so many iterations and journeys of finding pmf (and losing pmf and finding pmf again). one of the grittiest founders i've had the pleasure of knowing and i know he's gonna continue to crush
Both Bounce and Yulu started out in 2017-18 building micro-mobility solutions for urban consumers, as startups like Bird in the US and Ofo in China were becoming big. But the Covid-19 lockdown forced both companies to rethink their models and start catering to gig workers and hyperlocal delivery platforms. Today, their core business is renting electric vehicles to gig workers. The number of active riders across just Eternal (Zomato and Blinkit) and Swiggy has increased nearly 3x over the past five years from 350,000-400,000 to about 1.1 million active riders a month. Yulu was the first to pivot towards gig workers. It worked with original equipment manufacturers such as Bajaj, which is also a shareholder, to develop low-speed electric vehicles. These are particularly suited for quick commerce, which now accounts for about 60% of Yulu’s business. Bounce took a different route. It entered manufacturing directly by acquiring 22Motors and built an electric scooter that can also handle longer commutes, making it suitable for use cases such as bike taxis and courier services. Now, Yulu has also entered this segment with a new vehicle of its own. @thearc_hq has a deep dive on both companies, how their models have evolved, and the strategies they are betting on next.
