McMaster-Carr, the gold standard of web design. They didn't have anyone to look up to, there is nothing like it. They didn't use a design framework. They focused on fundamentals of design, not fads and fashion. mcmaster.com/ They didn't have to do it, but they did.

When groups meet to brainstorm, good ideas are lost. People bite their tongues due to conformity pressure, noise, and ego threat. A better approach is brainwriting: generate ideas separately, then meet to assess and refine. Group wisdom begins with individual creativity.

Hand-built, oversimplified models don't cut it anymore, but knowledge-free machine learning isn't the answer either. The future belongs to those who build models that can be fleshed out by machine learning.

Hating on actual builders and doers and makers is so wanky and lame. You just look like such a dipshit doing it. Almost without exception, it marks you as *precisely* the sort of person incapable of undertaking a similar feat.

Most people suck at managing up. They waste their boss’ time with too much (or too little) information. Here’s how to give the right amount of context:

It’s great when enthusiasm drives work. But sometimes it takes work to drive enthusiasm. When you don’t feel like doing something, try to get started anyway, set small goals, and celebrate your wins. Often the feeling of accomplishment can fuel the excitement to keep going.
