20,000 Men, $28 Million and AI Girlfriends in Taiwan Taiwan prosecutors say a husband-and-wife team built a romance scam operation that took more than NT$900 million, around $28 million, from over 20,000 men. This week, 57 people were indicted. The setup was extremely organized. Men were found on dating apps and moved onto LINE, then tested with cheap purchases like fish oil, supplements or power banks. Once they paid, their details and chat history were handed to another team that cultivated the relationship and started asking for phones, Dyson hair dryers, appliances, living expenses, medical bills and other increasingly expensive purchases. Male staff could use AI voice software trained to imitate the voices of the group’s actual female workers. If a victim needed more convincing, women were sent out to meet him in person. Earlier reporting from the investigation says some also had sex with victims. The operation even had custom software connecting operators with the women whose identities they were using, plus an ERP system tracking staff performance. Prosecutors also allege workers who missed targets were subjected to electric shocks and sexual abuse. They are seeking at least 25 years for the alleged ringleader and 18 years for his wife.
