Excited to share a piece I wrote for @ReviewofJourn about the CBC’s coverage of Palestine. I spoke to current and former CBC journalists about what goes on behind the scenes. reviewofjournalism.ca/cbcs-p…

In Anas al-Sharif’s final broadcast, he showed children starving in Gaza.
Hours later, Israel killed him in a targeted airstrike on press tents, along with 5 other journalists.
Israel has killed at least 269 journalists in Gaza since October 2023.

Quick fact-check: in its injunction application, @UofT says a continued @occupyuoft encampment at King’s College Circle could disrupt convocation.
But convocation has proceeded without the green space in the past, such as when it was recently under renovation from 2020-23.

ALT Text from the Toronto Star reads: "It charges protesters with not abiding by this student code. Lawyers write that an event was scheduled on campus grounds Monday, the opening celebration for the “Landmark Project,” but it had to be postponed due to the encampment. They write that the same fate could befall convocation unless the Ontario Superior Court of Justice intervenes. “The individuals representing Occupy U of T stated that if their demands were not satisfactorily met, they would live on the University’s lawn indefinitely.”"

A CBC producer is lifting the veil on how the broadcaster whitewashed Israel’s horrors in Gaza.
In a tell-all essay, she describes the inner workings of newsrooms where double standards and biases sidelined the truth—before she resigned in protest.

This is a thorough and damning piece and it's good to see it making the rounds. I also want to point out that none of this scrutiny is new. Two years ago @rfrwi published this piece (online and in print) for @ReviewofJourn

I have been working nonstop for the past 6 months covering what’s happening in Gaza, but what I saw today while visiting Al-Shifa hospital was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed before :
Israeli occupation forces executed 300 Palestinians in and around the hospital, and this morning, I witnessed hundreds of bodies outside the hospital , their wasn’t one full body all the bodies were either pieces or heavily mutilated .
The bodies were in horrific conditions; many had their hands and legs tied behind their backs and were flattened by a bulldozer.
Many of the bodies were burned and left to be crushed to pieces.
Several bodies were decomposed and partly eaten by stray dogs.
Most of the bodies were unrecognizable; families could only identify them by their clothes.
Al-Shifa hospital was considered the largest medical complex in the Gaza Strip, catering to many complex cases. It has been completely destroyed; they burned it down and destroyed all medical equipment. Israeli occupation forces has one goal and it’s to destroy every inch of Gaza

The scenes out of Al Shifa, after Israeli withdrawal, are beyond horrifying & gruesome. Bodies - parts of bodies - scattered under the dirt & rubble. Buildings burnt to a crisp. Nothing left. Our world allowed hospitals to become slaughterhouses in Gaza for crazed butchers.

This is officially a war against journalists. Rest in Power Farah Omar & Rabih Me'mari, killed by an Israeli strike in Lebanon. In total 4 journalists in Lebanon & 45 in Gaza have been killed by Israel. They're being killed with impunity & in higher numbers than ever before.

Beyond unconscionable. Reporting on the hundreds of Palestinians killed in an Israeli airstrike on a hospital, @andersoncooper in real time goes from “appears to be a huge of civilian life…uhhh huge loss of life”.
Mask off dehumanization.

If you’re watching coverage that’s lacking context/voices, email the news outlet. Journalists (particularly of colour) have been asking for fairer coverage from inside the newsroom and are often punished for it. Remember this? vice.com/en/article/5db398/c…

It’s been shocking to see
the lack of historical context provided in too many stories about the #Israel- #Palestine conflict. As journalism educators we need to prepare our students to tell critical stories. They need to be studying more history/philosophy/political theory.
