Musicals are my jam. Data is nice, but open data is so much better. Rollercoasters are awesome. Tea is good. So is courage.

Meanwhile, in Japan 🇯🇵 Office chair grand prix. The race sees teams battle it out on office chairs for two hours to see who can complete the most laps of the 656-foot course. Anyone caught modifying their chair is disqualified.

this is the oldest māori map of aotearoa, drawn by tuki te terenui whare pira in 1793 after he was kidnapped by the norfolk island governor to teach prisoners flax weaving. he couldn't, so he instead drew a map of the north/south island (focused on the far north) to get home
it's pretty funny that "new zealand" "nationalists" are so insistent on using a name not even given by the dutch guy who didn't land here, but dutch cartographers who realised that the guy who didn't land here was wrong about where he thought he was

Did not expect a question that starts out 'Do you think before you speak?' to go so well. A+ question from Charlotte Harpur A++ response from Eileen Gu.

4 of the 5 senior historian roles at Ministry for Culture & History are being cut. This cannot fail to have a significant impact on its responsibility to research #NZ history & maintain & update critical online platforms like Te Ara. @ManatuTaonga⁩ rnz.co.nz/news/political/567…

If we shine a torch up at the night sky, some of the photons released will eventually leave our galaxy and travel for a vast distance. They will eventually be able to reach any galaxy that is currently within 16.5 billion light years of us. 6/

I have a long feature in the new Listener, looking at the purge on walking and cycling infrastructure in the draft Transport GPS. It's highly out of step with the ambitions of local authorities – and with what's happening in the rest of the developed world.

Marrying the wrong man could make a woman stateless in early 20thC NZ. After she married a Dalmatian non-citizen in 1908 Miriam Soljak was told she had lost her citizenship, & must register as an alien. She did so only after being threatened with jail.
