Been in #Soneium from day one. Ran the campaigns, collected the badges, burned the time. 🫣
Money’s gone on Neemo, Kyo and the rest, but what’s stuck is the hours. No token, no reward, just another points farm.
The Sony logo was the bait. 💩

the 2026 buyback landscape
buybacks are now a serious capital-allocation tool, but they are still highly concentrated
from Jan thru Aug, crypto projects spent ~$638M on token buybacks, up ~17% YoY
nearly 90% came from only 2 projects:
→ @HyperliquidX: ~$370M
→ @Pumpfun: ~$200M
remove $HYPE and $PUMP, and the buyback meta becomes much smaller
protocols/chains generated ~$172M in holders rev over the last 30 days, or ~$5.4M per day
but this metric combines several different mechanisms:
→ open-market buybacks
→ permanent token burns
→ fee distributions
→ chain-level fee burns
i do not treat them as economically equal
so i built my checklist for every buyback announcement
» perps remain the strongest protocol category
- Hyperliquid generated ~$56M in 30D holders rev
- ~97-99% of eligible trading fees directed toward HYPE purchases thru Assistance Fund
by Sept 2026, ~48.4M HYPE, or 4.84% of total supply, had been classified as permanently burned
the cumulative acquisition cost was ~$1.32B
i see HYPE as the closest current example to a complete buyback model:
→ large operating revenue
→ consistent open-market demand
→ permanent supply removal
→ token utility through staking, governance and gas
only a limited share of HYPE is circulating
» launchpads are the second major cluster
PUMP now directs 50% of designated rev toward automated PUMP buybacks and burns
by late July, it had spent ~$414.6M and burned ~153.7B PUMP
later figures place cumulative purchases and burns closer to $450M - $462M
the execution is transparent and aggressive
the price result has been much less impressive
PUMP remains far below its ATH because the buyback solves only one side of the equation
users don't need PUMP to launch tokens, trade or use PumpSwap
unlocks also continue adding supply
this is the clearest lesson I found in the data:
a strong burn cannot fully compensate for weak token demand and continued vesting
@ponsdotfamily, @LaunchOnSF and @bonkfun have also made launchpads a meaningful holder-rev category
but their rev depends heavily on meme-launch activity
so i'd not value those cash flows like stable recurring rev
» DEXes are entering the fee-switch phase
@Uniswap began routing part of protocol fees toward $UNI burn
its 30d holder-value flow recently reached ~$16M
@aeroxyz produces significant holder value through its ve/gauge structure
although distributions are different from permanent burns
@Raydium buybacks have been strong enough to produce an actual net reduction in circulating supply after accounting for emissions
» lending and CDP protocols remain smaller
@SkyEcosystem generates ~$5M in 30-day holders rev thru buybacks and staking-related value flow
@aave CEO @StaniKulechov said a burn mechanism was being considered back in Sept 29
@ethena holders voted to direct 95% of net rev toward ENA buybacks
» chain-level fee burns are quietly larger than most DeFi programs
@CantonNetwork generated ~$49M in 30-day holder value
@trondao produced ~$24M and Ethereum ~$4M thru network fee burns
these are not discretionary project buybacks
so i keep them separate from the $638M protocol-buyback figure
still, they matter because the mechanism is directly tied to network usage
@BNBCHAIN burn program has produced a documented net decline in circulating supply
some 2026 analyses found only $BNB + $RAY delivering a clear net reduction in circulating supply after accounting for new issuance
buyback yield also needs context
at different 2026 snapshots:
→ PUMP showed a mid-teens holder yield
→ HYPE was around 4%
→ UNI and AAVE were closer to 1.3%
→ the S&P 500 was around 2.4%
» the legal framework is also becoming clearer
in its Sept 25 FAQs, SEC staff indicated
"a buyback announced by a functional network is not automatically evidence of the “essential managerial efforts” associated with Howey"
a live product using real rev for buybacks ≠ a pre-product team selling tokens w promises of future yield
so i TOTALLY BELIVE that buybacks have become one of the main ways profitable onchain businesses return value
but the market is currently concentrated around:
→ perps
→ meme launchpads
→ a few fee-switch DEXes
→ chain-level fee burns
everything else remains small, adjustable, paused or offset by emissions
