To some, once one's moral purity is tainted, nothing they say or do can ever be trusted again. To others, in reaction to the first group, moral purity is completely impossible so might as well double down.

I don't think we need to rub people's noses in their mistakes. But in order to be forgiven, you first need to apologize. If someone refuses to apologize, there is nothing to be gained from arguing in circles with them.
