This is total word soup. And I'm afraid he keeps saying how we'd have more control over immigration - but you can do nothing at all to control EU free movement (it's in the name) and the Dublin Agreement saw us as net-recipients on illegal migrant returns. Those are the facts.
Andy Burnham says he wants Britain to rejoin the EU again in his lifetime but he won’t get ahead of the public ‘In my lifetime I would like to see that happen but I am not going to move ahead of the public, I am not going to dictate. ‘We have a decade of experience now looking back at Brexit. I don’t to ink it has played out as people said it would at the time. We got a harder Brexit. It has weakened our economy ‘I am not proposing rejoining in this Parliament ‘I said we wouldn’t re-run the referendum. That’s not what I’m doing. The British public will be the bosses here ‘I don’t think things have worked out as they said they would at the time, particularly when it comes to immigration.’

Britain’s debt is now more than £3 trillion. The Government is borrowing just to pay the interest bill. Burnham’s EU fantasy is nothing but a distraction. But what has gone unnoticed by the Remainer media is the fact that the UK’s dire finances would rule out rejoining! EU rules state that national debt should be below 60% of GDP; the UK’s is approaching 100%. And the EU’s deficit limit is 3%. The UK’s is 4.2%. When these rules were drawn up, the concerns centred on Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain – the so-called ‘PIGS’. Today, the UK Government pays higher interest rates on its borrowing than any of them. Sadly, we are now at the bottom of the sty…
PM reiterates what he has previously said, that he'd like the UK to rejoin the EU at some point in his lifetime @GMB

£3 trillion of national debt. A grim milestone, the consequence of failing to live within the country’s means. The real scandal is how much taxpayers are now paying simply to service that debt, while borrowing continues to exceed forecasts. Money that should be supporting defence, strengthening our economy or remaining in taxpayers’ pockets is instead being swallowed up by interest payments. The answer cannot be yet more tax rises. In his first Budget, the Chancellor needs to demonstrate that he is serious about getting spending under control. That means taking some difficult decisions, starting with the ever-growing welfare bill. We cannot go on spending money we simply do not have.
BREAKING 🚨 Debt burden breached £3 trillion for the first time in September 2026 📈 The latest @ONS public sector finances showed public sector net debt was £3,005bn at the end of September - almost £92bn more than the same time last year.

I don't think they realise it, but yet again the UK Government is demonstrating the benefits of Brexit. They don't agree with putting higher tariffs on Chinese EVs, and object to Brussels dictating tariff levels. A Customs Union is *exactly that*. theguardian.com/politics/202…

I'm furious with my party. Rather than use its huge parliamentary majority to deploy the tools of national economic planning that are available to it outside of the EU in order to deliver a project of national economic renewal, what does Labour do? Pretend Britain is helpless unless it binds itself to the rules of the increasingly right-wing EU. We might have left the EU but the 'member state mindset' of the political class never went away. I will give my all to opposing this. – at Oslo, Norway

This is just not true. As soon as I became foreign secretary I asked the security services the same question and they replied that there was no evidence of any successful interference in the 2016 referendum, by Russia or any other power. Either the security services have changed their view - which would be very odd - or Burnham is lying about what he has been told. After all Starmer was in power for two years and had access to exactly the same information. theguardian.com/technology/2…

If you want to talk about foreign governments meddling in British politics. The pro-EU group "UK in a Changing Europe" admitted this week that they have been funded by the Spanish Government. Why on earth would the Spanish Government be funding a pro-EU outlet in the UK?

This is key: Foreign Office minister @SDoughtyMP says Russia was NOT successful influencing Brexit referendum “Did they succeed when it came to the Brexit referendum? Was that an effective attempt? Stephen Doughty: Well, the security minister has spoken about this before, and he's been very clear that they've attempted to [but] they haven't succeeded. They do attempt to interfere in our processes, have attempted to interfere in a whole number of them. And of course, it's not just Russia, it's other countries, too. but this is a whole society effort.

Deeply irresponsible by Burnham to suggest otherwise. He is clearly determined to undermine the democratic vote of 2016, no matter the cost.

Replying to @andyburnham
@andyburnham appears to be playing a dangerous game. I am not saying that Putin didn't think about interfering in the Brexit referendum, and he may have fiddled at the edges of the debate, but if the insinuation is that Russians succeeded in swinging more than a million votes to actually fix the referendum, then this is garbage. I have seen no evidence at all. I strongly suspect because there is none. Burnham seems to be implying: the Russians interfered therefore the result can be overturned or at least ignored. There IS a much stronger case that Russian planned to, and did, interfere in the 2016 US election by hacking into the US Democrat Party servers to trash Hillary Clinton - which they did. I can believe that election was swung given the very tight margins. Evidence of some activity in the Brexit vote? Believable. Evidence of swinging the vote. None. But whilst he is at it, can he talk about the interference in the Brexit referendum from Barak Obama or EU leaders? Or China's influence now? Or human rights lawyers lobby's influence over the Chagos debacle? Trouble is, Burnham's interview will feed, IMHO, EU obsessives like Alistair Campbell - a man who arguably did more to damage British politics than other single individual. The agenda here is clear. Smear the Brexit referendum as illegitimate, and then take Britain back in, without a second referendum but after a General Election. I refused to believe that there was anyone worse than @Keir_Starmer. But Burnham's dishonesty and self-delusion are dangerous. Likewise our ugly and arrogant leftwing elites who believe their moral virtue and belief in socialism gives them the right to do what they want. Like I said, a dangerous game. #Brexit @haynesdeborah

On Britannia Shield, a really useful in-depth commentary from Tom Sharpe, who spent circa 25 years in the Royal Navy - including as an Air Warfare officer - giving him a deep practical understanding of the subject. Yes he’s extrapolated in places, but he gets the premise of the plan and is spot-on overall. Worth a listen for those who want to understand the detail.
🛳️Shipping Broadcast🛳️ Actually more of a 🚀Missile Broadcast 🚀 in keeping with the theme of the week... This is my attempt to dissect the Conservative's plan for better Integrated Air and Missile Defence for the UK. They have rightly identified that frankly, it couldn't be much worse. In sum, the idea is sound. Largely basing it on existing programms-of-record allows them to drive down the price. I've done some fag packet maths in here (and my article, to follow) and it adds up. Much of the initial criticism, including by Labour, was based on not understanding the proposal and immediately jumping to the dome image powered by mega-systems like Patriot which we’d have to buy and integrate from scratch. This is entirely inaccurate. As to the 'Sense, Decide, Effect’ part that make it work, much is already in place, is Navy 101 and just needs cohering better. It won't be easy, but it is doable. The threat is real and getting closer - having proper layered defence makes it less likely to happen and increases our abity to respond if it does. Is it a priority for defence? There are many others but I'm assuming we can do more than one thing at a time. And the cost is low. In sum, this is a good idea and has got the converstation started. In my view it could work and could come in at the asking price. The current government should collaborate to take the good bits and develop them, rather than mocking it based on a lack of understanding. youtu.be/bC7aa6UkZZ4

Inheritance Tax punishes people for working hard, saving, and leaving something for their children. That’s why we Conservatives are taking the first step towards abolishing it completely. We will scrap Inheritance Tax completely on the family home and raise the threshold for other assets to £1 million for a couple. We are on the side of people who work hard.

Rubio confirms that the departure of the Bombers from RAF Fairford was routine and not security related. A useful correction after the Pentagon Spokesperson’s version earlier. The US doesn’t need to signal it will run at the first sight of a white van near the perimeter fence…
