Scary to see this, whether it is unneeded over-reaction or appropriate obeisance to the new US administration. statnews.com/2025/02/03/trum…

The publishing system sucks and will continue to suck so long as tenured, full professors at state universities spend their time whinging about other peoples' privilege instead of focusing on their own responsibility as public employees to make science function well.
The subject area board for doctoral study. And I would not be surprised if the same were true for grant results. So they require publications to be listed in WoS. It can be small publication in MDPI, but now not eLife.
Replying to @mbeisen
We wanted to submit to eLife, but becaue it is not in WOS it would not be counted as publication for PhD students. It is a pity, great journal that I read regularly…

This is a great explainer for the Publish-Review-Curate model. There can be different 'flavours' of PRC, which is already happening, but there are some fundamental principles to each of the P-R-C stages which are important to understand: osf.io/preprints/metaarxiv/h…

The "How Equitable Is It?" tool results from robust discussions within the "Beyond article-based charges" Working Group. The group's strength lies in diverse stakeholder views: funders, librarians & publishers, as Roheena Anand @PLOS notes.

"IWA Publishing is therefore adapting its implementation of S2O. All journals will continue to be published on an open access basis, but authors at institutions that do not participate in IWA Publishing’s S2O model will no longer be able to publish free of charge."
