The Glazers have done to United what New Labour did to Britain.
I’m all in favour of recognising the (net fiscal) contribution that people make when it comes to determining ILR policy.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

Apparently the Government don’t foresee any negative unintended consequences to this whatsoever…
This Labour government’s transformative Renters’ Rights Act empowers private renters to challenge unreasonable rent increases.
If a tenant believes a proposed rent increase is above the open-market rent, they can refer the matter to the First-tier Tribunal.
In a recent case in Manchester where the Landlord proposed an increase in rent from £1,650 per calendar month to £1,700, the Tribunal determined the open market rent was actually £1,450 per calendar month.
We’re standing up for renters and our reforms are working.

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced changes to car parking fines
- Drivers will have a 5-minute grace period to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a parking session ends
- A £20 maximum charge on appeal for minor mistakes, such as entering the wrong number plate or not displaying a permit
- Charges will also be cancelled on appeal for breakdowns, medical emergencies or broken ticket machines
- The £100 cap on charges will remain
- The rules will come into force as soon as possible and operators that break them will lose access to DVLA data
This is…pretty bad.
It’s official: a legal investigation has found engineers in Britain’s electricity grid control room are stressed because renewables make it so hard to keep the lights on. And when they raise concerns, managers won’t listen - they only want “good news”

🚨 NEW: A man in Bradford has been found to have attempted to rape a homeless woman who was dying or already dead in a tent. A judge has ruled that he is unfit to plead due to having such a low IQ.
• Bradford Crown Court heard Hassan Shah, 26, of Edderthorpe Street, was captured on CCTV entering the tent on Kirkgate on the morning of 8 November.
• He lay next to the unconscious woman and pulled down her clothing without trying to communicate. The prosecutor said she did not move because she was dying or dead.
• She died from synthetic cannabis and alcohol, unconnected to Shah.
• A judge had ruled he was unfit to plead because of low IQ and a learning disability, so he was not in court.
• The jury unanimously found he “did the acts” of attempted rape and attempted assault by penetration. Sentencing is adjourned until December for reports.
• Because he is unfit to plead he cannot receive a prison sentence. The judge will decide between a hospital order, supervision or discharge.
