Definitely sorry to see you go. It was hard to leave Seattle after living there for a few years, so I get wanting to head to that part of the world. We'll be down here trying not to let the bastards get us down.

This is certainly the way I'm letting my career progress. We'll see where it goes!

Moral of the story: you have no idea where your career is going to take you, so just roll with it and take opportunities when they present themselves.
This has been a problem for decades now. My thought is, if you move to a place because it's cool, support some of those things that made it cool! Once covid is better, go eat at long-standing restaurants, or see a show with a local musician. Something!
Imagine if all the people who say they care about Austin tech actually cared about Austin?

Five years ago this month, I started my first job as a professional software developer. After spending a decade in public-school classrooms, the road to that moment was long but worth it. Here's to seeing what the next five years brings.

What was your job right before your first tech job? I'll start: 🛫 Flight Attendant 🛬
Without hyperbole I can firmly say that there's no one you'd rather have working on your Node apps than Evan. Just being in the same room with him means you'll learn something about Node. The fact that he's available means someone's about to get really lucky.
Looks like I’m available effective immediately. Anyone looking for someone who specializes in #nodejs, feel free to reach out.

Excited to announced the next @reactjsaustin meetup. Come to @Vrbo's HQ in the Domain for a talk on Styled Components in @reactjs. There will also be an opening presentation on Vrbo's internal coding bootcamp, transitioning non-tech workers to tech roles. meetup.com/ReactJS-Austin-Me…
I completely agree with this but feel weird saying so because I was a writer before I was a developer, so it feels self serving. "We spend too little time evaluating candidates' ability to do the thing I'm good at…"

And yes I added an apostrophe to "candidates" because I can't help myself. Grammar judging is constantly on full throttle.

This weekend my daughter looked out of our hotel window and declared, "Hello, World!" I've now documented the first real-world utterance of this phrase in all of recorded history.

This rings very true for me. I think the best thing we can do is not over-hire for either CS grads or those from other paths. Mixing them together would make for a team with lots of both theoretical and practical skills.

Point is, the knowledge is useful whether you get it through a formal degree program or on your own. It’s up to you how you get that knowledge, and there’s no reason to disparage the path someone takes to get it.
I've been playing with this library for a while and we use it pretty heavily over at Vrbo these days for our Node.js apps. I've finally transferred it to our official OSS home to continue its development. github.com/ExpediaGroup/grap…
