Over 500,000 men have been gunned down in the last 6 weeks. Your best friend, brother and cousin have all been killed. The stench of death, blood, gunpowder and rotting flesh is everywhere. Trench foot has caused your feet to go black, swollen and your skin is peeling from the bone. When you can't hear gunfire, you hear echoes of coughs from all the influenza, tuberculosis and typhoid that is spreading. The letters from home pile up in your pocket. You can't bear to read them anymore, can't stand to see your mother's careful handwriting asking about James, Thomas and William. How do you tell her that her other son died choking on gas? That her nephew bled out in a shell hole? That your best friend since childhood died of sepsis from an infected wound? It's now time. Your turn to go into no man's land. All you've seen is waves of soldiers disappearing into the machine gun fire. You've heard the screams turn to gurgles as they drown in their own blood. Your officer starts counting down from 5.
