Washington’s Worst Wildfire Caused by Arsonist, Not Climate Change. A man carrying matches and a lighter has been arrested on suspicion of starting the largest of three wildfires, which have destroyed hundreds of buildings and displaced thousands in the Spokane, Washington, area. PULSE POINTS ❓ WHAT HAPPENED: A Washington man has been arrested and charged with starting a large wildfire ravaging the Evergreen State. 📺 DETAIL: Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, was arrested and charged with first-degree arson on Monday. Farinacci has been accused of starting the Old Trails Fire, the largest of three wildfires currently ravaging the Spokane, Washington, area. The Old Trails Fire has destroyed at least 700 buildings and displaced approximately 67,000 people. Farinacci had previously been convicted of manslaughter in Arizona. According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Farinacci was carrying matches and a butane lighter when he was arrested. Further investigation confirmed that the fire originated in the area where Farinacci was sighted. 🎯 IMPACT: All three fires remain uncontained, and the cause of the other two fires is still under investigation. Farinacci is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. Last month, President Donald J. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada due to pollution created by that country’s wildfires. “We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their forests and brush,” said the President in a post on Truth Social. The wildfires in Washington represent another major wildfire to hit a Western state. Last year, the Pacific Palisades in California were ravaged by a major wildfire. A man was subsequently arrested on charges of starting the Palisades Fire, although a mistrial was declared back in June. “The court finds there is a manifest necessity to declare a mistrial because the jury is deadlocked… We have people on both sides that are dead set, unwavering, and unwilling to change their opinion,” said Judge Anne Hwang at the time.
