India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers, fought a 4-day war in May 2025. Pakistan signalled nuclear risk. Still, conflict ensued. Why didn’t nuclear deterrence stop it? My new paper argues the answer lies in how nuclear signals are read — not just sent. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…

My answer: perception dissonance — the gap between how India and Pakistan each read the nuclear balance at any given moment. How each side interprets the other’s nuclear signals. The paper is now published.

India also mobilised 500,000 troops after the 2001 Parliament attack — and still backed down. Same nuclear dyad. Similar provocations. Three completely different outcomes. Something structural was driving this. But what?

A student once asked me: Why did India strike back after Pulwama but do nothing after Mumbai — an attack ten times worse? “Political will” wasn’t good enough. I spent three years researching to find a better answer.

I argue that from the killing of the Iranian leadership on the first day of the US- Iran war to an alleged plot to assassinate Trump, the norms around leadership assassination are unraveling to devastating diplomatic effect. asiatimes.com/2026/09/open-s…

Western policy can keep waiting for a captive nation to rise up and be rescued, or it can start dealing with Russia’s reality. Right now, it’s doing the former, mistaking its own bad diagnosis for the Russian public’s failure to see something obvious. asiatimes.com/2026/07/why-th…

Russians carry an unsentimental view of their government’s failures alongside a stubborn sense that Russia’s separateness from the West is worth defending. The West keeps expecting the first belief to erode the second. So far, it hasn’t. asiatimes.com/2026/07/why-th…

It’s a comforting theory as it lets them explain Russian conduct without ever asking why millions of Russians might actually consent to the arrangement. It obscures the uncoerced, genuinely popular foundation of the post-Soviet Russian state. asiatimes.com/2026/07/why-th…

For decades, standard Western vocabulary for Russia has settled on words like fascist and totalitarian. These terms assume that the Russian state survives on coercion alone, that ordinary Russians are essentially a captive audience waiting to be freed. asiatimes.com/2026/07/why-th…

I write that Washington and Brussels keep calling the Kremlin fascist and totalitarian. It's the wrong read on Russia, and it’s a big part of why five years of diplomacy have gone nowhere Why the West keeps missing the point on Russia asiatimes.com/2026/07/why-th… via @asiatimesonline

Xi Jinping’s Thucydides Warning And How a U.S.-China Hegemonic War Can Be Avoided? by Sajid Farid Shapoo countercurrents.org/2026/06/… Xi Jinping’s recent invocation of the “Thucydides Trap” has renewed debate over whether rivalry between a rising China and an established United States must end in conflict. Examining theories of power transition and historical examples ranging from Britain’s accommodation of American ascendancy to Cold War restraint, Sajid Farid Shapoo argues that hegemonic wars are not predetermined. The article also considers how ongoing tensions in the Middle East complicate U.S. strategic priorities and highlights the need for restraint, accommodation, and disciplined competition if the world’s two most powerful states are to avoid a catastrophic confrontation.

When the West Found Jihad Useful by Sajid Farid Shapoo countercurrents.org/2026/05/… Sajid Farid Shapoo examines how Western powers, particularly the United States and Britain, treated Islamic identity and jihad as strategic tools during the Cold War. Tracing developments from the Middle East to Afghanistan, the article argues that anti-communist policies helped expand the global reach of militant Islamist networks. It situates Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and other regional actors within a broader geopolitical framework rather than portraying them as passive instruments of the West. The essay reflects on how Cold War alliances, covert operations, and ideological calculations contributed to long-term consequences that later reshaped global politics and security debates.
