If you know how to live you have nowhere to live in India 'I can now live where I want, in clean air, running through nature, walking through urban beauty, living in private austerity and public splendour. This means I have to leave India. Because most of the country is a mofussil hellhole in the smog.' Read free on my Substack. manujoseph.substack.com/p/if…

Is Gandhi the most misunderstood individual of the 20th century? The man we know as the "Father of the Nation" has provoked the most furious arguments. Having studied Gandhi for decades, I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book, ARGUMENTS WITH GANDHI, where I examine the engagement with his ideas of a range of global figures, from Ambedkar and Nehru to Mandela and Martin Luther King. Sachin Tendulkar of Editorial Writers A.V.S. Namboodiri, the former Associate Editor of 'Deccan Herald', has completed 35 years of writing daily, unsigned editorials for the Bangalore newspaper. At approximately 300 editorials per year, that's roughly 10,500 editorials in all. And at 450 words per edit, that's about 47.25 lakh words over 1,820 weeks. *** Ananthampilli Vasudevan Sankaranarayanan Namboodiri, to give his full 48-letter name, started on the edit page as an Assistant Editor in 1991, when the sanctum sanctorum of the paper boasted some stellar bylines. The first editorial was on the political goings-on in Maharashtra. Barring a four-year period from 2004, when he helmed the newspaper's operations, Mr Namboodiri has churned out an editorial every day, sometimes two, and written long think-pieces. After retiring from the paper as Editorial Advisor, he continues to contribute. *** Now 75, Mr Namboodiri says it takes an hour or two to whip out an edit, but admits that even after 35 years he feels a tinge of nerves when he starts. "I wonder if I will be able to fully articulate what I want to say and complete the edit," he says. "Will all the words and ideas fall into place? What if I can't complete the edit?" *** Mr Namboodiri's phenomenal output matches that of two other Malayalees with a Bangalore connection. Pothan Joseph, the founder-editor of @DeccanHerald, wrote a daily column titled 'Over a cup of tea' for 53 years, across publications. Joseph's biographer, T.J.S. George, wrote a weekly column for the @NewIndianXpress for 1,300 weeks. In an era when mercenary owners diss editorials, and idiot-managers want to sex them up, Mr Namboodiri's durability offers an insight into how DH has invested in, and built, institutional memory. @AvsNamboodiri
AN EDITORIAL ANNIVERSARY, YET AGAIN: Completed 35 editorial years today, writing almost every day, sometimes two a day. Wrote on topics in politics, economics, society, literature, the arts. The editorial on August 4,1991 was about Maharashtra politics and today it is about last week’s Supreme Court judgment on environmental law violations. (In the link) It could be the longest editorial innings of any writer, on a pitch that changed every day, but in a world that we have famously said has always been the same. What do editorials do to a writer? Everything said and written, you are still where you started. What do they do to the world? Everything heard and read, the world remains much the same. The daily engagement with the world in its fullness is the newsperson’s remit, giving him a sense of living in history and the illusion of explaining it. But after all that explaining over the years, I am still not sure of most things. The story that I first edited 48 years ago was about Sholokhov’s And Quiet Flows the Don. I was shocked to see that the copy had the word ‘’quite’’ instead of ‘’quiet.’’ The word, edited, written or wounded, still flows through the years. Come to think of it, does the editorial, rippling with words, look like a river flowing to the reader? deccanherald.com/opinion/edi…

My article in Deccan Herald proposes a new method for women’s reservation. It avoids the delimitation process and proposes a fair and realistic way out of the present deadend. Comments are welcome.(The table may need to be modified.) @BJP4India @INCIndia deccanherald.com/opinion/wom…
