LM surprisal outperforms surprisal over human cloze responses as a predictor of reading times. Why is this the case? We standardize how to treat cloze surprisal, manipulate LM probabilities to reflect biases in the cloze task, and discuss how both measures can be combined.

🥳 New paper at #EMNLP2026!! w/ @linnotlinn_ (applying to PhD program this cycle), @ttk_kuribayashi @weGotlieb How well do language models actually simulate human language processing? We investigated this through the lens of context size and discourse structure. 🧵👇

had a great time giving a talk at the Yale Lingusitics colloquium about "beyond associative insights from AI" (thanks @RTomMcCoy for hosting), and had lots of fun conversations with the folks there! again featuring my favorite bridge figure:

🤖🧠NEW PAPER🧠🤖 What is the relationship between neural networks & symbolic systems? Based on evidence from mechanistic interpretability, we argue for a quasi-symbolic view of cognition: Neural nets implement symbols but only approximately Link: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… 1/n

What if asking an AI the same question in a different language gets you a different answer? When multilingual sources disagree, models tend to follow the one matching your question's language. Our new paper introduces Waldo to study this, and tests two ways to reduce it. 🔎🧵

How much is an AI token worth? We fit scaling laws to find out! In August 2026, Pangram labels 31% of FineWeb-filtered web tokens as AI-generated, up from 10% in June 2024. We pretrained 800 LMs (19.9M–973M params) on mixes of human and AI web text to measure what it does to pretraining 🧵

Are LLMs / VLMs becoming more human-like in their cognitive judgments, as measured by computational cognitive science experiments? Only slowly, it turns out, in this new multi-lab paper led by @LanceYing42!

Although AI models have improved rapidly on math, coding, and STEM benchmarks, progress in capturing human commonsense judgments is steady but much slower.

🦀New preprint! (w/@najoungkim)🦞 Is grammaticality a major organizing principle of NLM representations? We show that many NLMs exhibit abstract rep. separation for grammaticality. We believe this work addresses debates about confounds in measuring model gram. knowledge. [1/10]

When I applied for PhD positions 3 years ago, @RICEric22 told me he knew my email was not AI-generated because I mentioned that the french toast on his website looked really yummy. And that (partially) got me an interview. Be yourself and don't be a robot!
Two pieces of advice for students doing cold outreach: 1. Read the professor's page and follow directions about their preferred outreach method. 90% of students who email me do not follow the directions on my page. 2. Hand-write your messages from your heart. We can tell.

One reason I've found recent AI safety/risk discourse frustrating is the proliferation of oppositional "my side" vs. "their side" framings, when in fact there are many axes of disagreement, including among experts. My attempt to characterize them, from a lecture last semester:

1/ Every language is unique, but the big AI companies release a single model to cover dozens of languages at once. BuzzASR 🐝 takes a different approach: We release a swarm of 102 monolingual speech recognition models, beating Whisper on 77 languages and achieving SOTA on 27.

It’s exciting to see labs at the forefront of interp research posting educational material! But it’d have been great to acknowledge that probes’ originate from the tradition of linguistically motivated model analysis, which itself was inspired by neuroscience!
Models usually know when they’re doing something wrong. Probes let us “read their minds” to detect offensive cyber intent, reward hacking, strategic deception, and more. If you build or serve models, they’re your first line of defense. Our latest post explains how they work & how to use them - the first of a series of educational posts on applied AI interpretability. 🧵

🤖🧠NEW PAPER🧠🤖 (The result of an 8-year project!) LLMs seem very different from symbolic systems. Yet LLMs excel in symbolic domains (e.g., language/code/math). How do they do it? Our finding: LLM representations have implicit symbolic structure! Link in thread ⬇️ 1/n

🍎🍊 How would you know if a language model is better at one language than another? Our #EMNLP2026 paper argues that only one metric can actually lead to fair crosslingual evaluation. This work is a collaboration with @weGotlieb & @linguist_cat! (1/5)
