Perhaps @cavancoco & @cuilcaghlakes could follow as precedent has now been set. Maybe @NPWSIreland officers could visit west Cavan & see the devastation caused by invasive Sitka. We had a govt. funded study which found Sitka had seeded at 1400 mts from source onto designated SACs
Sitka Spruce declared an invasive species in Wiclow & Government plan to get rid of it.
Farmers peanlised in ACRES for having self seeded SS on their lands. "polluter pays" should be imposed on the timber industry, corporates, investors & @coilltenews

This is exactly what is happening in #Leitrim & other parts of the west with the 🌲 programme, the wholesale transfer our land, heritage, farming communities, unique landscapes & environment into the hands of investors & corporates for profit only. WHY

When we get a few days sun the forest industry start spoofing again so it’s time to repost this.

Why sequester and store carbon if it all shipped out to another country purely for profit. There is no net carbon gain or climate benefit in 🇮🇪 from a forestry model like this where profit and return on investment is all that matters

Farmers in the west sold a pup with forestry 🌲 in the 1990s when it was being planted on deep peat, wetlands, habitats, "bad" HNV land, anywhere and everywhere in fact.

It’s hard to believe. Were there any other candidates- even if they only had 2 trees, one coniferous & one hardwood.
Based on our experiences in #Leitrim /around the country @coilltenews
Are falling way short on biodiversity. Its not part of their statutiory remit. In direct opposiition/conflict to their sole profit remit. Spending on biodiversity takes from profits ?

What kind of a country have we become when such one sided commercially produced propaganda tripe is being paid for by taxpayers and endorsed by @MHealyRae to indocterinate our children.

Good to hear the Forestry Industry challenged on RTEliveline today. Sending inaccurate information to Primary Schools about Sitka Spruce, is a new low for the Forest Industry. A reminder to all Primary School Teachers today is World Curlew day. Two sides to every story.#Curlew

Forest plantations are a blight on the future of our communities, farming families, on our biodiversity environment & landdcape because there is too much of this being forced into #Leitrim & other areas by @agriculture_ie Forest Service @MHealyRae ++

If this damage resulted from farming activity @IFAmedia @farmersjournal the farmer would be prosecuted & would loose payments under breaches of crosscompliance. But this is acceptable to @agriculture_ie forest service @MHealyRae so that profits can be extracted from plantations
Since we are into 2026 it’s good to remind all in the “pretend it’s green” campaigns to plant non native conifers at the expense of communities 👇
Activist: "We should plant trees to fight climate change."
Farmer: "On grassland?"
Activist: "Everywhere possible."
Farmer: "Grassland soil stores 200 tonnes of carbon per hectare. Trees on the same soil? Maybe 100."
Activist: "But trees sequester faster..."
Farmer: "Above ground. Where it burns. Grassland accumulates below ground. Where it stays."
Activist: "Trees are permanent..."
Farmer: "Until fire, disease, drought, or logging. My soil carbon has been accumulating for 8,000 years."
Activist: "Surely trees are better..."
Farmer: "Better at what? Looking impressive? Grassland's better at stable, long-term carbon storage."
Activist: "Why doesn't anyone talk about this?"
Farmer: "Because planting trees makes good photos. Maintaining grassland doesn't."

By planting 0ne third of all available land in Co #Leitrim mainly with 🌲 & generously funding it with 🇮🇪 taxpayer funds is a state led land clearance which is shutting down our rural areas & destabilising rural population, services & community sustainability.
Why? @MHealyRae
@savewestcavan retweeted
& @rayofoghlu this one of the main reasons, 8 years ago, @SaveLeitrim started to resist the wholescale cumulative afforestation of #Leitrim by investors (incl investor farmers) funded by taxpayers pushing local farming families off the land & destabilising our rural communities
