Superconducting qubits getting faster and beginning to operate at higher temperatures! Happy to answer any questions about these experiments.

Congrats to @AndreiVraji for his last paper from my group on many-body quantum optics, combining ultrastrong coupling and photonic crystals. Andrei is just finishing a postdoc with @schusterqed @photonjon and would make a fantastic faculty member. arxiv.org/abs/2209.14972

Never heard this before 🤯🔭
Today in my general relativity class I got to talk about my favorite SUPER WEIRD COSMOLOGY FACT which is that if you have galaxies of the same size at different distances, beyond a certain distance, the farther away the galaxy is the BIGGER it appears in the sky (!!!)

Excited to share our new open-source quantum instrumentation control kit (QICK), developed with @Fermilab, with @physicsfpgaeda, and @nanonoodle (and others without twitter accounts). The paper is at arxiv.org/abs/2110.00557 and the firmware/source is at github.com/openquantumhardwa…

Even with just the eval board and some inexpensive analog components, one can fully control a superconducting qubit experiment including direct synthesis of qubit control pulses, single-shot readout, and real-time feedback. Control is through python with no PC required.

We'd love to build community around this platform and other open quantum hardware efforts. So get in touch if you'd like to try this out or contribute.

Our perspective article on protected superconducting qubits is now online at PRX Quantum bit.ly/3mRLfS2. What do you think comes after the transmon to reach fault-tolerant QC? Or is the transmon enough? Work done with @GyenisA @agudipaolo J Koch @nanonoodle @schusterqed

There has been a lot of Sayonara Majorana scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=53… since the recent Nature retraction but what about other independent results like nature.com/articles/nphys242… via AC Josephson effect or science.sciencemag.org/conte… from @LabYazdani using STM

Especially the latter one, while potentially less useful for QC, seems like it would have much less disorder, and can be imaged as well as studied spectroscopically. Any observation of Majorana's is very exciting even if we're a long way from QC! @spinespresso, others, thoughts?

The new results from Pan and Zhang have sparkled again a healthy debate on quantum supremacy. A crucial aspect (often overlooked) is that **both** non-error corrected quantum hardware and classical simulation scale exponentially at "simulating" quantum circuits. (1/5)

We sometimes talk about quantum money, in the sense of using entanglement to protect against forgery. But what is the smallest unit, or quantum of money? This question is considered by the authors of this fun article: doi.org/10.1016/j.physa.2020…

Assuming 1.5bits of information per character, we have only explored <10^-70 of all possible tweets (excluding memes). So at least as much discourse and literature to explore. It's a big world in both atoms and bits out there.
Voyager 1 is furthest human-created object traversing 10^-14 est. diameter of the universe; approx. 90M molecules are cataloged, est. 10^-53 of all possible w/ mw < 500. We’ve explored more physical space than chemical space & (by extension) the space of things that could exist.
