Finding Your Voice
One of the hardest things for an artist is understanding that finding your voice takes time.
When you're starting out, everybody influences you. The artists you grew up listening to. The sounds that are currently working. The people around you telling you what they think you should sound like.
That's normal.
But eventually, you have to start separating influence from identity.
Your voice isn't just your vocal tone. It's your perspective. Your subject matter. Your instincts. The things you notice that other people don't. The way you tell a story. The choices you make when nobody is telling you what is commercially safe.
You cannot build a lasting career by constantly asking what the market wants from you.
You have to understand what you bring to the market that it cannot get from somebody else.
That requires knowing yourself before trying to convince everybody else to know you.
Who are you when the trends disappear?
That is usually where the real artist begins.
